Can I shoot my M4 profile 16" barrel in NRA Service Rifle competition? Or do I need to get a 20" upper?

I'm not concerned with the added sight radius that the 20" upper gives, I understand I'll be at a disadvantage. My question is strictly about the legality of the shorter upper in NRA Service Rifle.

I have an A2 stock on it w/carry handle and standard sights.

NRA, CMP "Service Rifle" vs. everything else

Many clubs will let you shoot for fun at the match, but the NRA & CMP will not validate your scores.

If an M4 is what you have, go shoot it at a match and have fun.

(From an earlier post)

If you want to shoot an AR "Service Rifle" it must look like this. (or with no flash hider) They refer to the outside shape as needing to be the same as the A2 or A4 battle rifle.

You'd be able to shoot it in the Match Rifle category. Most Highpower matches are shot under NRA rules where there are both Match and Service rifles shooting side by side. CMP "Leg" matches only come up at regional/state championships. There is no Match Rifle category in CMP matches.

It's not very often when the difference matters. The only time I've seen results split out by category has been at Camp Perry and State Championships.
