My wife and I are interested in getting into competition rifle shooting (we are both beginners) We both like AR15 rifles so HP Service Rifle seems like a logical venue. We would like to use the same rifle but she is petite and I am large so we will need different size butt stocks.
I was reading the rules on the NRA website and it makes two references to stocks:
1 "with standard-type stock, pistol grip, hand guard...."
2 "External alterations to the barrel, upper and lower receivers, stock, hand guard, or pistol grip will not be allowed..."

Is there only one size butt stock available for the appropriate AR15? If shorter lengths are available can a shorter butt stock be used and not violate the rules?
Links to AR15 lower sections and/or butt stocks would be appreciated.
thanks,

I have seen people use an A1 buttstock which is shorter than an A2 on a service rifle. This is a grey area because the A1 stock is an issue item but there never was an A2 upper issued with one. I would not have a problem with it in any of my matches but there are range lawyers out there that could. I think there is sufficient grey area there and I always rule in favor of the shooter.

You could have two lowers and one upper. Or you could just shoot a match rifle and have one adjustable stock.

I don't think that it's a grey-area at all...

NRA highpower rules do not specifically mention the A1/A2 buttstocks, but rule 3.1.3 (Service Rifle) states "Any rifle or modified rifle not covered by NRA Rules 3.1, 3.1.1 or 3.1.2, but permitted by CMP Rules are considered service rifles in NRA sanctioned competition."

CMP rule 6.2.3(11) specifically allows the use of the A1 buttstock.

I'd say that you're good-to-go.

Be advised that collapsible stocks, or solid buttstocks shorter than an A1, will put you into the MATCH rifle class of NRA highpower and exclude you from CMP Trophy matches entirely.

Congrats on getting into the sport! Stick with it and keep 'em in the X-ring.

Unflappable,

Your wife would be good to go with an A1 length buttstock in CMP-EIC events and NRA Service Rifle.

As stated, an adjustable length butt is not allowed at all by CMP and would take her out of Service Rifle and put her into Match Rifle category by NRA rules.

Good and factual replies so far. Just remember that where you shoot will have some impact on just how anal the other participants will be about your equipment. Local clubs are more interested in gaining shooters and less concerned about weighing your trigger pull before and after every match!
best, Dave

"...like to use the same rifle..." That's not a great idea. You'd both have to sight in every time. Plus the stock size difference. It's very hard for two shooters to use the same rifle.
AR stocks come in colours too. Like pink.

I agree with the stock issue.... but sight settings is no problem. If you don't have your dope written down... and CHECK IT before each stage on the line, then you are really screwing yourself up right from the git-go. I've never met a Highpower shooter worth the gas from a can of pintos that didn't do his sights during prep time at each and every stage.

Sights.... non-issue.

Best to all,
