M77 setups? What are you running ?

sappyg, the cartridge carrier isn't in case I "run dry". Once I forgot to pack ammo for a trip. It was really embarrassing, having a gun but no rounds for it. I solved that problem by just keeping the ammo with the rifle all the time (hence the carrier). Now I can just grab the rifle and go...

Also, I have an M77 question, hope this doesn't derail the thread but what is the point of the "scout" version?

I understand the advantages of moving the scope forward if you have a rifle that has "top eject" or a rifle with a straight bolt handle that won't clear a scope. Or if you need to load it with stripper clips. But the M77 has none of these issues, so what does the scout configuration do for you?

I really appreciate the scout scope setup because of the huge amount of eye relief, and to be honest, it is quicker and easier to get a clear sight picture with the scout scope. I had a conventional setup before. But going from offhand, prone, bench, etc. the eye position is never the same and I found that with the scout scope I was no longer searching for a clear scope view in any position. Plus I get to keep my iron sights, just in case.

I find a low powered scope such as a 1-4X mounted conventionally to be far better than the forward mounted scopes. On 1x they are faster to pick up the target and far far easier to use with more magnification. The military tested both systems and found conventional mounted optics worked better and went that route when they switched over to optics.

The nice thing about the Ruger is that it allows both mounting systems.

There are other features not commonly found on most rifles that are useful. Having a DBM with the option of having 10 rounds, or a flush fitting 3 or 4 round magazine is nice. As well as irons. They are not common anymore, especially good ones.

I could see one in my future, I like carbines for hunting and bumming around. I'd zero the irons, then take em off and mount a scope conventionally. With Ruger rings the optics can be off and the iron sight returned in less than a minute if needed. I'd probably lose the flash hider too.

Mine is a M-77 All-Weather in .270. I had a trigger job done and it wears a Weaver 6x fixed power scope. I have posted pictures before on THR of the sighting in target with a 3 shot 1/2" group at 100 yards.

There isn't any need for anymore whistles and bells other than a good trigger and good scope.

Not a bad way to go.

One of my favorite hunting rifles is my Ruger77RSI International .308 Win in Stainless (18-1/2" barrel, full stocked) with a Leupy VX3 2.5-8x36. I have a leather Ruger sling on it. It is short, light and handy in a terrific caliber for CPX-2 game out to 300 yards. I also have his brother with the same set-up in .270 Win but I feel that I'm giving away a bit too much velocity with the shorter barrel in this caliber. My 12-y/o grandnephew will probably use it when we go deer/elk hunting in December.

I have a few but this old tanger 35 Whelen that I tweaked some is on top. They came with a very light contoured barrel that goes .558" at the muzzle so I wanted to build a relatively lightweight thumper. I finished and bedded it into a High Tech Specialties LW stock, added a sling swivel barrel band from a #1, worked the trigger to 2 3/4", installed n NECG Sourdough front blade, filed in a fixed rear blade to be dead on at 200 yards and had it matte blued. The scope is a 2-7X Leupold VX-II in Leupold low rings. I load the 225 gr TSX over 60 grs of RL-15 for 2700 fps. It shoots three consistently inside 1 1/2" which is fine by me.

Standard Hawkeye in 30-06 with a Nikon Monarch has put federal fusion bullets in the same hole on more than one occasion. Don't ask me what I'm doing right cause overthinking stuff is my specialty. It may never happen again but I'm liking the way mine shoots.

A Ruger KM77VTMKII 308 Winchester 26" barrel, the Target gray finish light laminated stock, wears a Burris Fullfield II 4.5 X 14 42 mm and a Brownell's Competition Plus sling.

A rifle capable of shooting 5 rounds all touching at the standard 100 yrds.

You guys are awesome!

Thank you everyone for chiming in and providing crucial information. It sounds like everyone is running factory ruger rings with 2-7 or 3-9 power.

I'm a big fan of the 30-06 anf look forward to the built. I'll post pics when done. Good bless.

Mine is a MII in 6.5x55 with a Burris 6x. The trigger isn't the worst but I may replace it or have a smith work it over.

Close to perfect Whitetail Gun.

I don't have a 77 in the safe now (need to remedy that), but I had a tanger in 270 that had a gorgeous piece of fiddleback walnut. I put a 3X9 Vari-II Leupold and a and a Holland leather sling on it. It would shoot cloverleaf groups with 130gr Speer HotCors or Nosler Solid Base. Over the years it accounted for 22 whitetails, 2 mulies, 2 pronghorn, a bobcat and a turkey. Three of the longest shots that I have made was with that gun.

A few years ago I ran across a 77 compact in 260 Rem. at a yard sale. It was a gray laminate stainless that I stole for $350. Stuck a 2X7 Nikon Prostaff on it and a Ruger leather sling. Loaded with 120gr Speers it was pleasant to shoot, easy to carry and absolutely deadly on whitetails. I would have to rate it as almost perfect for whitetail. If it had been walnut/blue I would still have it.
