magnum primers with hp38/win231 in 45acp?

Edfardos,

It's interesting that you noticed about a 0.3 grain difference between velocities when switching to magnum primers, which is about what I would expect.

I recently tried some Tula small pistol magnum primers in place of Winchester small pistol primers, and noticed a very minor difference in velocity, almost negligible. Based on my results, I'd say they were almost interchangeable, but your results say otherwise. Either the Tulas were weak, or the WSPs were hot.

Changing brands likely skewed my results, so I might have to retry the experiment like you did, and use CCI standard and magnum primers for the comparison. I was looking for another excuse to go shooting anyways...;)

I shot about 1000 45acp using W231 with magnum primers during the last ammo rush. All primers were non-existent and I had plenty of SP primers, so I traded 1000 regular SP Primers for them. I had no problems at all. I was doing a "medium" load of 5.2gr of W231 with the standard primers, and did not even change the formula for magnum primers.

In the future, I have stashed away 1000 small primer 45acp cases. Once I (some day) use up all of my large pistol primers, I may trade all of my LPP cases for small primer cases. Then I can switch to only stocking small pistol primers.
