At a pistol range a while back I was shooting some pretty stout 357s through my GP 100 (I get quite a bit of grief from many gun enthusiasts about not using 38sp) when a gentleman laid his gun down and came over to see what all the noise and concussion (indoor range) was all about. I showed him my gun and he told me he'd be right back. Returned with a brand new LRC in 357 mag. Said he bought a 38 when they first came out but just could not resist a 357 mag when they came out later. Handed me his gun and said to give it a try. All I had on me were heavy (180XTP/H110 at just .1 grain below max.) He said go ahead and shoot a couple, anyway. The darn thing nearly came out of my hand. I was just very pleased to be able to shoot one when as yet I had never even seen one. Looks like a great carry gun WHEN ILL GET CCW...uuuuh,but I think it would never see anything more than 38sp. Then I loaded up my GP with magnums and handed him the gun. HE loved it! At 10yds he put 3 of the 6 through the same hole and the other 3 not far away. His 357 is a single action Ruger with "traditional" grips. Could not believe how well the GP handled the recoil and he swore I must have had some trigger work done. Smooth as silk. I told him I had not touched it nor changed springs.....just that I shoot it a lot. I got a feeling he'll be owning a GP soon.

I awaited the arrival of the GP when they were first announced , bought the first 1 in my county of residence & have never looked back !!!

Traded a few other brand revolvers for a few GPs also, never a regret !!!

Your post made me chuckle. I could not find a new one anywhere in my area, but one gun shop told me they were taking delivery of the exact gun I wanted,6" SS,the very next day. The next day I sat in the parking lot of a gas station across the street from the shop and when I saw the FEdEx truck pull up front of the gun shop I was over there before it even came off the truck, even though the dealer said he'd give me first shot at it.

I hear ya Ruger GP100 fan!! , I even had put $$ down on my first 1 & almost had it paid for !! Dem were the days I think tax & all it was $268.00

Mine was just a year ago. I wanted to pay for it ahead of time, but they said they'd hold it for me and that left me uneasy. So....I camped out across the street.

well, the view from "the other side of the aisle" here is -
nothing will ever replace S&Ws 38/357 Ks in my heart, but if I were after a new production full size 357 to exclusively shoot full house loads, my 1st choice no-brainer pick would be a 4" GP100

don't much care for full underlug 6" barrels, the 4" GP100 strikes me as ideal balance, stout enough for forever, excellent trigger

all thumbs up

If it's any comfort to you I support your shooting 357 Mag in your GP100. If you want to shoot 38 Specials then get a 38 Special. I have five 357s in the safe and not a one of them has fired a 38 Special round since they came into my possession. Magnums should be fed Magnums.

Mine's a pig at the range. Gotta have big bites...not nibbles:) I can't help thinking about that elderly man at the range firing a cylinder full of heavy loads threw my GP. I'd almost bet he's looking for a new GP,if he hasn't already found and bought one. I'm 61 and he was well beyond my years, but the twinkle in his eyes when he handed my gun back...priceless!
