Has anyone made 308 brass into 243 without having the donut in the neck? I have tried to make 6.5 Creedmoore and had donut and seems like few I tried doing on 243 same problem. Reason doing it I no longer have 308 went to 6.5 and have several pieces of Lapua 308 need to use not waste them
Thanks

Why don't you just trade someone the 308 brass for 243 brass or any other brass you may need?

I think I have read posts where reloaders had pressure problems with brass necked down from 308 cases. The case necks were thick and pinched the bullets in the chamber.

I used to do reform 7.62 NATO brass to .243. No problems at all until about the 4th or 5th time I full length resized them; then I started to have case head separations.

I made 500 pieces of RA-70 7.62X51 brass into 243WIN brass by sizing thru a 7mm-08 die first, a 260 die second then down to 243.
I annealed after first 7mm-08 sizing. All sizing was done incomplete meaning I did not size to shoulder until final sizing in new 243 die. I use spray lanolin for lubing cases inside and out spraying down at 30 degree angle from 3 sides, let dry and then the fun starts. I lost only a few while developing the process. All have been reloaded several times. Things to consider: 1. Resultant neck thickness 2. Possible donut (I had no problems) 3. Anneal again after first firing. 4. Not full resizing allows bump in neck to hold case in proper place to allow for proper fireform without stretching case web. 5. Due to increased wall thickness of "military" brass, loads may need to be reduced to prevent overload.
After annealing and neck turning for consistent wall thickness, these have become my best for Match loadings.

ive made hundreds of them by just running them through a 243 die. Never need to trim necks on commercial brass. You could if you wanted but it was never really mandatory. Now im talking commercial brass. If you use thicker military brass you will need to neck trim

After reading this post and it has been several years since I tried it, I thought I would give it another try. I resized a .308 commercial (PPU) case to .243. I did get a small donut at the bottom of the neck, but it chambered in my rifle with no problem. The donut won't be there after one firing. Anybody in the Nashville TN area want .308 brass send me a message. I have no use for it.
