Police: Man Accidentally Shoots Self While Driving
Passing EMT Treats Man At Scene Of Accident

POSTED: 4:34 pm EST January 3, 2007

CONCORD, N.H. -- Police said a Webster, N.H., man shot himself in the leg and caused an accident while driving down a busy road in Concord on Wednesday.

Investigators said Robert Drown, 22, was driving on Loudon Road and emptying his loaded weapon at about noon. Police said Drown accidentally shot himself in the thigh.

"It's like he rear-ended a car, went up over the curb, didn't hit the brakes or anything, took out the sign and jumped out of the car covered in blood," witness Jeff Raymond said.

The collision happened about 50 yards from a fire station, and police said Drown tried to run to the station before collapsing 20 feet from the door.

"A good Samaritan, an EMT, saw the whole thing and responded with first aid," Maj. Robert Barry said. "Concord Fire then responded with treatment, and he was transported to Concord Hospital."

Drown's vehicle was heavily damaged, and a sign at a 7-Eleven that his vehicle hit was destroyed. Drown was rushed into surgery to repair the gunshot wound.

"It does appear that he lost a significant amount of blood," Barry said. "Loss of blood is the concern at this point."

Investigators said the incident was a case of poor judgment.

"When you handle a firearm, it should have 100 percent of your attention," Barry said.

No charges have been filed, but police said the incident was still under investigation.

I have absolutely no sympathy for this person and am glad that no one else was hurt. He deserves everything that will happen to him.

..And i thought drivers talking on cell phones/eating/watching TV/showering were bad.........

When I saw thr title, I thought to myself... "I bet this happened in Ohio.." The "Really Dumb" part of Ohio CCW is still in effect for a little while longer.

safe than sorry

better safe than sorry. One time I cut myself real bad during a knife safety lecture....and another time discharged .308 downrange into target area while attempting to put weapon on safe. Reason #84 to keep muzzle downrange until EMPTY, and always treat as if it could go off. Usually bikers who have hit the floor are better riders, drivers who have had a little bang up are better drivers, and shooters who have had minor accidents respect their weapon even more, and don't underestimate their own or others' stupidity!

Drove by this on my way to work yesterday, but didn't know what was going on at the time. They had just put the damaged vehicle up on the ramp truck when I drove by. I was so focused on everything else, I hadn't noticed that he took down the store sign. Oops.

I first saw the yellow tape, and thought that the 7-11 had been robbed. When I looked further down the street, I saw the ramp truck, and the two cruisers that had the side street blocked off.

Still trying to figure out what reason he would have to try and unload the weapon while he was driving. Personally, I don't think he was trying to unload it. I think he was playing with the damn thing, and it went off.

I'll have to keep an eye out, and see if anything else is reported in the paper.

A few years back we had a girl on the 495 (LIE) who died while attempting to change her pantyhose at 70mph. :what:

We also have an assortment of dropped-lunch-more-important-than-life, same for cell phones, etc.

No charges have been filed, but police said the incident was still under investigation.

Here, if that happened? Probably couldn't make bail. "Discharge of Firearm within 8 Par-Secs of a Supermarket," held pending hearing. License revoked, permanently. All arms to be surrendered to the clerk.

I keep seeing these things happen around the country, and folks have a fairly calm approach to them. I don't know ...

Not the same, but still:
Friend down in FL has a lady friend who went to visit her mom, flew with checked baggage w/PPK. Gets a rental, puts PPK in glovebox. Eventually gets back to airport, goes home. Rental attendant finds PPK in glovebox.

It took a couple of months, but she has it back. Here? See above.

Actually --- stop it, I'm being serious here --- I think the law states that any discharge of a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling must be reported immediately.

At a guess, it's probably not acceptable to light one off in your vehicle, either.

Sounds like the guy involved is going to be OK?

Good thing it wasn't (wait for it!) --- a Fotay.

It's New Hampshire, guns are simple objects here, and you're supposed to be responsible for yourself. When the guy said this:
"When you handle a firearm, it should have 100 percent of your attention," Barry said.
...probably what was really in the thought bubble over his head was "dumb**s!"

If he got charged they would have to use sign language...I'd suspect his hearing was poor for a bit after that!

I've swapped out ammo in a revolver while driving. But I didn't use the trigger to unload the ammo, just the cylinder release. :neener:

ND with a revolver? Why I've read THR and I know that it is impossible to have an ND with a revolver. We all know that the Four Rules do not apply if I have a revolver, right?;)

Keep your boogerhook off the bang switch regardless of what weapon you have or how Hollywood you think you look parading about with your finger on the trigger.:)

I agree Manedwolf. Too many accidents are caused by people trying to multitask while they drive be it talking on the phone, eating, disciplining childeren, putting on makeup etc. It's not just your hands and/or other body parts that are compromised but your BRAIN is also compromised by having to concentrate on additional tasks.

Well, you're just gonna have to get over it. It's not like I was doing it at 55mph in traffic. Trigger and finger were nowhere near each other.
