Oh. Wow!

My NRA Counselor showed me his MantisX during a training session and it was one of those moments when I knew I had to have it. Just came in this weekend and in the first couple of hours with it I have put in 500 rounds dry-fire.

Dry fire has never been very satisfying because of the lack of feedback. This has taken it to a whole new level. Unboxed it and started right away with the Compressed Surprise Break drill. I've always shot Master Level, in my dreams and during dry fire, but now I know what actual competition as always born out, I'm no where near that level. BUT NOW I have an idea what I'm doing wrong. And I can work on it dry fire as well as live.

What it does is using acceleromators measures and records your movement just prior, during and after trigger pull. Gives you its suggestion as to what you were doing (pushing forward, jerking, etc) and shows where your bullet probably would have landed. Has so many features and programs I've only just scratched the surface. Works with dry fire, live fire, air soft and CO2 activated training guns.

Three of us ordered this at the same time so the Counselor got us a hefty discount from the store where he works. Still for me it is worth it. YMMV

I got one a few months ago, and I agree it's a great tool to bump your dry fire drills up a notch.

To date I haven't tried it during live fire, but I plan to once I can make a trip out to the outdoor range again.

+1. Great for those of us without a coach. I had to use a real CZ magazine, not a clone, to have mine mount on the base.

I've thought about getting the SIRT pistol along with some of the LaserLyte Targets, as people say they work with their SIRT pistols (red laser version only) or any red laser. It seems like one could buy a few of their targets and have some pretty good dry fire, draw and sight alignment practice at home. I've heard really good things about the SIRT pistols but have no personal experiences. My range time is limited these days (stage of life) but having 30 minutes in the evenings while winding down from the day, it would be good to work on some skills.

The MantisX looks interesting, I just wish it had a way to recock the striker/hammer, but using it on live fire might be a good way to go on seeing what one is doing.

Very interesting! Great way to get real world feedback on what you're doing wrong as well as what you're doing right. Thanks for the info!

.....along with some of the LaserLyte Targets,

I had both the barrel insert and the 9mm cartridge LaserLyte. They didn't last 3 months of regular usage. Plus there really wasn't any feedback when you didn't hit the target as to what it was you were doing wrong.

MantisX doesn't make anything but there are CO2 conversion kits for Glocks. You can use your frame/trigger with the trainers magazine and slide. MantisX has a mode just for that configuration.

The MantisX drawback is it does require a Picatenny rail under the fore end. They have adapters available for a lot of models that don't. I'm good with my G17, S320, S250 and M&P. Just need a clamp on adapter for my revolvers. It is so easy to install the MantisX though. No tools, just slip on the rail and release the locking bar. Ready to go.

Dammit, man, you just cost me almost $200.

Which LaserLyte target did you have that didn't last?

That's why the SIRT pistol has a rail on it for another $200 product to make you shoot better.... This is getting expensive.

In all seriousness, I would like something to use at home at night when the kids are in bed, just to work on fundamentals, other than just dry fire). I'll have to roll the MantisX around in my head and watch some more videos and reviews on it.

It was 5 years ago or so. I had two, don't know the model #s but here are similar pictures. I had three of the small reactive LED targets. The targets worked fine but lasers quit working after a couple thousand rounds. Since it was a while back I'd bet they've rugged-ized them some now. I can be pretty hard on products. Out of warranty when this happened, plus I didn't think they weren't giving me the feedback I wanted so wasn't interested in replacements.

Michael Bane (Shooting Gallery and MichaelBane.TV) has one on order so I expect a review by him soon. Kevin Creighton (Ammoman blog) has just gotten one also, so watch for his take on it.

One last update on Mantis.

Here's my history for Dry Fire. 600 Rounds. I was getting better. Note that this does not represent a "target" but it is a graph of how much and which direction you moved at the time of fire. Pretty good I thought!

BUT NOW, let's do some live fire.

Oh, different story. Here's the target of ~80 rounds at 25yds. 10 done using the Benchmark with no timer, and the rest using the "Timed Benchmark". Can you tell my problem from just the target?

They do generally fall "low" but kinda all over the place.

Now look at the MantisX analysis.

Turns out I'm leaning into my gun as I squeeze the trigger.

Did I say I love this device?

I looked into the Mantis system for my daughter (she’s into Olympic 3p shooting) but ended up going with SCATT MXW2. It is by far the best investment for her to practice anywhere, even if it did cost $2000. We have used it on live fire as well and it was 100% accurate, the mantis is real close but if you’re looking for an edge you may consider the SCATT.

While the Mantis does have a Bullseye mode, you're probably right for serious, REAL SERIOUS, Bullseye and Olympic style shooters the SCATT is the ticket. I think at 1/10 the cost the Mantis is perfect for us "action" style shooters.

Alfsuave,
I don’t see anything on the Mantis screen shot of your live fire analysis that says you’re pushing the shot’. What am I missing?

I’ve been looking at the system and others results over on a Facebook group. It seems like there’s often a big difference between the dry fire and live fire scores—so how is Mantis improving things!

Live fire scores are lower, especially when shooting rapidly, but I felt after dry fire practice with MantisX I had developed a much better trigger pull and and less tendency to bad habits like pushing forward. Ymmv.
