A long while ago we all got into a discussion about ways to mark magazines so that you could tell identify a troublesome one out of a group.

I searched but couldn't seem to find the method one guy used where he made a bunch of dots (almost a dice pattern) and filled in the dots with paint. The person who did it made a very precise and professional looking pattern and I wanted to find out how he/she did it.

Anybody got any ideas?

Yeah but I'm talking about marking 'em so when you get home and pull 5 identical mags out you can still tell WHICH one is the problem :neener:

I was using this silver "sharpie" marker but Weaponshield and Gunzilla both work so well that the ink just doesn't stick so I have to do something different and I'm fussy enough to want it looking kinda professional not "slap-dash".

An electric engraver tool, or Dremel with a tiny carbide dental bur works well for me!

It would even look halfway professional if my handwriting skills were better!

I've used Wite-Out to mark some of my magazines, in the form of a number on the floorplate. For something more permanent (it wipes right off with any solvent), consider an electric engraver or even a scratch awl.

I have snap-caps in my range bag.

If I wanted to identify select mags I would just put snap-caps in those mags. When I got home, I'm pretty sure I'd know which ones I had "marked". :)

Once home I'd use an engraver if I wanted permanent markings.

I believe I have read a post by Ken Mays that he uses Norells Molly resin and some stencils to mark his magazines...

Marking Magazines

I used some red fingernail polish to mark the magazines on my .45 auto. Just a few little round dots will work well.

You could also use a Sharpie.

If you need it to look high speed/low drag check out www.etch-o-matic.com you would need to get a stencil kit also. If it's plastic I brand them with little irons made from a paper clip, heated with a candle.

+1 on the auto center punch or the engraver ball depending on how big you want the dots to be.
+1 on flattening bad magazines with a hammer, great stress reliever.

Have you considered using a set of number stamps (like machinists use) to number each magazine? I mark 45 mags on the bottom plate. Use a steel flatbar clamped vertically in a vise. Then take the disassembled mag and slide it down over the bar to back up the bottom plate. Use a medium sized hammer and strike only once. Practice on a piece of scrap metal first.

This will help you identify your mags should they get mingled with others at shooting events. You may want to mark a different area but you get the idea.

Duct tape has always worked for me. Wrap it around the troublesome mag and throw it in the range bag, pull out the mags at home and toss the ones with duct tape on them in the junk box. Every one should carry a roll of duct tape.
