Marksmanship and heavy (.375H&H) recoil

I'm not an expert (hence this thread), but in my experience the head/neck insult is extremely depend on posture. My first range trip I used my usual stool (partially laid down on the bench) and the gun about kicked my shoulders out from under my head. My neck hurt for a week.

I stole a short stool from the pistol range so I'm sitting upright, with elbows still on the bench; it's much like standing up from the waist up. The headsnap, cheekbone impact, and neck ache are gone. The bruised shoulder remains, but I'm young yet.

You may well be onto something. I know that the folks who regulate the big doubles do so from a "standing bench" which is essentially a shoulder-height table. This apparently allows the body to absorb recoil as it would from standing, but with most of the stability of a bench.

I personally am finding more and more use from shooting sticks, both with handguns and rifles. They do not offer quite the stability of a bench - but I am awfully tired of trying to control guns from the bench!

While I'm not a huge fan of my 375 off the bench it is not painfully uncomfortable. I've shot it prone, kneeling, sitting, standing, and from the bench. I like the bench the least.

But it has never caused me more discomfort than a little bruising at my shoulder.

Not all of us are as tough as Texans!

Now, if Trail Boss loads were a little more precise....:uhoh:

I'm almost out of SR4759 :(

Sure impresses the young bucks at the range until they realize your 375 H&H is actually closer to a 38-55.

There's a (mid 60's?) older gent i happen across at the outdoor range occasionally.
He shoots a double 470NE. Always does it standing and from shooting sticks. I asked him once if he had ever shot from the bench. He just handed me a cartridge the size of a hotdog.
NOPE!

Now I gotta learn with .577 snider and 577-450MH loads.
It just don't seem right if the Martini just goes pop instead of roaring. :D
