I figured I'd wrap up a couple of OLD threads that I started regarding the re-finish of a Marlin 1894c that I got my hands on. I tried to update the original threads but they are too old...

When I got the rifle the stock was badly scratched/gouged and the finish looked like a beat up old Mosin Nagant. The rear site was bent and rusted, the front post was also beat up and uneven.

I stripped the stock, sanded it down, stained it, then did a Tru Oil refinish which took about 6 weeks and a lot of 0000 steel wool rubbing thanks to my thick coats. I installed a Skinner rear aperture site, and ended up having to go with a Lyman 0.560" tall front sight post to get it zeroed in how I want.

I've never refinished anything before, so this was a bit intimidating, but in the end was a fun and relatively easy project.

Anyway, here are the pics.

Looks like you did that old Marlin some good! That Tru Oil looks like a real satin finish, for a first time refinishing job, you did real well. I too know about the first time job, the next ones will be easier, you won't be afraid the jump right in next time! Let us know how it acts at the range, you might really be surprised then.

Thanks, I was quite pleased how it turned out. The TruOil turned out to be perfect, it's thicker and sturdier than a plain BLO finish and not as thick as a varnish - plus it's a nice smooth satin finish not all shiny and glossy.

Let us know how it acts at the range, you might really be surprised then.

Unfortunately I've only had the opportunity to shoot it at 50ft at the indoor ranges here, but it pretty easily does quarter groups standing - dimes if using a makeshift rest. I need to get out to 100 meters using sand bags and see what it'll do.
