I picked up this old Marlin the other day. The gun is in pretty good shape over all. But the stock has been beat up pretty good. No cracks or major dings but quite a few scrapes, scratch's and what looks like a little paint splatter. I've refinished the wood on a few long guns, But this will be my first with a carving. I'm thinking strip the wood, a dab of darker stain in the low area of the carving for contrast and finish with tru oil. Would that work? 20200211_180551_resized.jpg

I wouldn't do the strip. I would carefully scrape away the paint spots, then apply a new coat of finish (your choice).

I think a strip is necessary. There are a few places that will have to be sanded out and a small chip that has to be dealt with. 20200202_202855_resized.jpg

There are a few ways to address your stock and I don’t mind going over them to help.
But first off you need to think about the condition of the metal. Do you plan to refinish the metal? You wouldn’t want to refinish the stock and make it real pretty and put a rifle that shows ware. You don’t want to end up with a pig in a prom dress.
