I have found out that it is possible to install a full length
magazine tube and I'm looking into adding a picatinny rail
that will allow me to run a low power scope or red dot optic.

I'd be interested in hearing about that full-length magazine tube when/if you get around to it. If you're looking for a Picatinny rail, I'd highly recommend the XS Lever Rail followed by the XS Lever Scout Mount. The Lever Rail mounts to the receiver/barrel in four places, three screws on the receiver and one at the rear sight dovetail and it gives you a lot of options. Both are extremely well-made pieces that sell for around $60.

:)

We made a deal an I pick it up my new GG Tuesday :)

thanks for the replies and the link. I'll order a Scout
rail and also post what I find out about the mag tube.

No problem, thanks for making me want another 45-70. :banghead: Please do keep us posted...very interested in the longer magazine tube. 2 extra 45-70 = 2 boxes of .223 :D

H2O MAN, congratulations on your Guide Gun ... I have a feeling that you're going to love it. I don't know if it's important to you or not but the Scout Rail mounts to the receiver with three screws whereas the Lever Rail mounts with four screws ... just thought you should know so that you have all the information available to you. The Scout Rail is mounted using the two forward most screw holes (screws supplied by XS) on the receiver and a screw that threads into a dovetail "blank" that replaces the rear sight.

The fit between the XS rail and the receiver/barrel is excellent and the Lever Rail only weighs 75 grams (Scout rail weighs less than that) so three screws are enough to ensure that the mount never moves under recoil. The Lever Rail will give you more options in terms of scope position so that's what I chose.

XS has a couple of good videos showing the installation of their rails ... well worth a look.

Looking forward to hearing about the mag tube extension.

:)

... nice gun 1858

Maverick223, thanks ... I'll be painting it soon using KG Coating's Gun-Kote 2400 (bake on epoxy). I haven't decided what color or colors yet but I'll post some photos when I'm done. I'm going to paint my XLR (.45-70) as well. I like stainless firearms but I'm not a big fan of the bright finish. I like painted stainless firearms even more ... :D ... stealth PLUS corrosion resistance.

:)

Please, use black...Gun-Kote is good stuff

I don't want to take over this thread but since you mentioned black, these are the colors that I have on hand:

2401F Flat Black
2402LF Flat Light Olive Drab
2402MS Mil Spec Gray/Olive Drab
2404MS Flat Light Earth
2404F Flat Dark Earth
2405F Flat Service Brown
2416F Military Foliage Green
2410F Flat white

I'm kind of leaning towards light olive drab, dark earth, foliage green ... or black.

:)

I'd go with the flat black (IMHO their best "color"), but could live with the Flat Lt. OD or mil spec gray. Have fun, Mav.

I am in the market for one as well..I am partial to the stainless ported version... just think it has a crazy wicked look to it.. not to mention it is quite short and has very maneagabe recoil from what I have been told... hope to find out....

stainless ported version
Don't buy it till you shoot it...I would imagine it is loud, and 45-70 doesn't have nearly as severe a recoil as it has a reputation for. I enjoy shooting my falling block, and would do it all day if I could afford the cartridges.

...I would imagine it is loud,...

Mine is ported. When just shooting for fun, I of course wear hearing protection. When hunting I do not. When shooting at a deer, I don't notice it to be any louder than any of my other hunting rifles. It could be, but I don't know that. :scrutiny:

What I have planned for my Marlin has been done before, but...

...I'm learning as I go because I can't locate the owner of the weapon pictured above. I would like to know if the configuration has any issues.

Sorry I'm not really computer savy. The thread is titled Now it's done I think.
I bumped it to the top for you.
It's in the 336 section

Yep thats the one.
I meant the same one pictured above...but close enough. I really like the paracord wrapped handle that is pictured above, would make it much more comfortable.

That's a close look-alike, but it's not the same rifle.

Still looking...

The Guide Gun is an awsome carbine. I bought mine in February for $429 I think. It was NIB. This Sunday was my first time out with it using my handloads. 405gr Remington JSP over 50gr. of H322. Awsome!

Do you think the Marlin can handle a 405 pushed to 2200fps?

That's a 20% increase over the maximum velocity listed in Lyman's 49th Edition and those numbers were generated using a 24" barrel. The maximum pressure they list is around 27,000 CUP for the 300gr and 405gr bullets. 2200 fps is faster than the maximum velocity listed for the 300gr JPP! Even if you were somehow able to push a 405 gr bullet that fast in an 18" barrel without a catastrophic failure, I don't think such a load would be fun to shoot. A 405gr bullet leaving a Guide Gun at 1750 fps is nothing to sneeze at in terms of recoil.

:)

Was talking about a 24" bbl in a xlr...can be safely done from a Browning 1885 High Wall. Makes for a nice thumper...:D

NOTE: Haven't worked up to it yet in my rifle, but shot a friend's 1885 that did just that. Will be using a similar load in my 1885...so need to keep the loads seperate, um very separate.

No it isn't, but man is it fun.:what::p

I want to say that it was very similar to the recoil on my buddies Remington in 458 Win. mag.
