I think they're excellent rifles. Mine (non-Guide-gun) is more accurate than you'd expect a levergun to be. I also think you'll be glad you got the non-ported model.

Still it would be a heck of a rifle to hang on the mantle in case you get attacked by a stampede of Cape Buffalo.
I had that happen once...that was a bad day...my shoulder still aches...:D
Why is that?
+1 for the Doc., I would think the ported model would deafen you w/o good hearing protection. And who wears earplugs when hunting?

With better mics and better sound from the headphones a person could easily hunt with them.
Didn't say you couldn't...but all the deer would stand around and laugh at you... :neener: Not that you couldn't do it, just not many that do, I need to get a set (currently just use plugs), but can't see me wearing them hunting.

did someone say full length tube? how about we throw in a ghost sight with rail and an enlarged loop. well that would describe the new Marlin SBL

Looks like that may be my future deer rifle. It has about everything I like (SS, pistol-grip stock, extended tube); the only feature I don't like is the loopy lever (too big for my taste but can live with it).

the large loop is meant for people who have gloves and can aid in quicker follow up shots. I can attest to it as I have a large loop on mine :)

They just don't look or feel as good in my hands (and I wear thin gloves so not an issue).
I'll have a set on if every deer in the woods lines up to laugh at me
I'd even wear em' if I could teach them to do that...:D

Not a guide gun, but I but a full length mag tube on this 1895. It held 7+1 rounds!

I had a gunsmith cut a new dovetail, I ordered all the parts off Brownells.

True about the gloves, but it's slower otherwise. Look at the SASS shooters. They wrap the levers of their rifles with thick leather, to reduce the space as much as possible. reduces the distance the fingers travel without accomplishing anything.

The big loop levers go the other way, and increase it.

I like that very much.

Seems the only place you can buy one is through Davidsons though, and it's continually out of stock. Not sure if it's even shipped yet.

I wish it had the straight grip.
I wish it didn't have the dopey "Scout Scope Mount". Pretty difficult to please everyone, though!

If someone doesn't care for the oversized loop, couldn't it be replaced with a standard one for the model 336SS?

Technically it's an XS Lever Rail and not an XS Scout Rail and if you're interested in mounting a regular scope or a scout scope there is no better way to do it. However, if for some reason you don't want it, it's easily removed. As for the lever, the stainless lever from the XLR will fit perfectly and I'm sure that one could be ordered from Marlin, Brownell's, Midway etc.

As for the new Guide Gun shown above, I REALLY want one. I like the big loop lever, the pistol grip stock, the extended magazine tube AND the XS Lever Rail. My only concern is what the heck I'd do with my current Guide Gun once I get my paws on the new one. It might end up being the ugly sister that doesn't get taken out very often and that'd be a real pity!

:)

If I get one...I wouldn't be willing to spend the extra cash to remove what is considered to be an upgrade, but if someone wanted to trade, then I would do it.

Maverick223, I'd 100% trade the lever on my XLR shown above for the big loop lever from a new Guide Gun. If you're serious about that, send me a PM when/if you get the new model.

:)

I figured you would, and I will certainly do it (assuming I do pick one up).

I'm not set-up to roll my own just yet...

Who has the best deal on a few hundred rounds of newly manufactured,
re-loadable, general purpose .45-70 ammo for my new 45-70 Guide Gun ??

H2O, Lee Precision still sells its "Classic Loader" in .45-70 ... you can start loading your own for very little money.
