I knew I'd be adding more Marlin lever action rifles to my collection after buying an 1894 Cowboy Limited in .45 Colt a while back. I was so impressed by the way Marlin resolved the issues with that rifle (and the rifle itself) that I had no worries ordering two more. I couldn't decide between the XLR and the Guide Gun so I ordered both in .45-70!

The XLR is a BEAUTIFUL rifle and the photos really don't do it any justice.

I really like those XLR's I may have to buy a 30-30

If you have a chronograph I would love to see velocity comparisons between these two rifles

A friend just bought a chronograph so I'll see if he'll let me borrow it (or supervise my using it). I'll report back if I'm able to compare the muzzle velocity of each rifle.

:)

That's a great looking pair of Marlins, Picked up a 1895m .450 about a month ago. IMO, I think they are some of the best LA's out there.

Really great looking rifles, you going to go with factory semi-buckhorns, aperture or a scope?

Just a experience guess, but I'd bet on about 25 fps per inch of barrel difference.

I was thinking of a 1.5 - 5X Leupold or similar on the XLR and a ghost ring set up on the guide gun. From what I've read on this board, loads of eye relief is desirable with this caliber when mounting a scope.

PremiumSauces, Zebraranger and ECVMatt, thanks for the kind words ... Marlin does make outstanding rifles, both in terms of appearance and function so I hope that I get to enjoy these two for many, many years to come.
