Marlin 30-30 lever action

My friend asked me to keep his (newly acquired) Marlin 30-30 in my safe. We recently took it out to the range and compared it to my CZ 527 Carbine in 7.62x39.

Pretty neat gun! Action is decently smooth and quick handling. I can see how this would be one of the whitetail favorites.

I will say though that it is quite a bit heavier than my CZ. Probably a non issue, just an observation. It does hold one more round than mine. Kicks considerably more than the CZ, and he was grateful when I slipped a Limbsaver on there.

My brother in law has one, 336A, he got at Big5 sporting goods. I have put at least 40 rounds through it myself. It is made well, as most Marlins are and shoots very nice. 1 1/2 @ 100yrds and he has only tried Winchester and Remington ammo. Great 100yrd deer/pig gun maybe 200yrd if you use Hornaday Leverevolution ammo. For the money it is a great buy and $318 is a good deal.

I have 3 rifles on my "To Buy List" and all 3 are Marlin lever guns. They will be bought in this order:
1) 1894C
2) 336C
3) 39A

I'll agree with all above, another plus is the 30-30 is easy to reload. Brass is everywhere. I've loaded 110g bullets with 4198 that will spin a varmit/skunk/groundhog/squirrel/cat/coyote/rabbit 360 when hit, and 150g milsurp spire points (single shot only) that are very good for longer distances for target shooting, and 170g softpoints that have solidly dropped deer. You can shoot any .30 cal bullet. My primary powder is IMR 4895. My 336 is handy in brush,tree stands,canoes, and kayaks. Might want to get an extra ejector spring. Easy to lose if not careful.

It's too bad that the ammo makers don't offer a wider range of loads
(especially smaller than 150 gr) for those of us that don't reload.

I'd love to have access to some 110 gr. for "plinking", just to get more familiar with the rifle. With as many 336s as there are out there, I'm hard pressed to believe they wouldn't sell well.

Choose your medicine. On a related note about power, accuracy and reliabilty, I recall clearly and vividly that during the Contra affair there were several people trampling the jungles with Marlin lever-actions in .30-30!

My 30-30 Marlin 336 is doing a good job dropping hogs so it certainly satisfies me.

The only centerfire rifles I own are two 336's. One is in .30-30 and the other is in 35 Rem. I can't compare to other rifles, but I love both of mine and bought a 39A to go with them. All are excellent shooters. I reload for the .30-30 for plinking with the Speer 110gr semi-jacketed plinker bullet and use IMR 4064. Mine will clover-leaf at 25 yds. if I do my part. I love it!

I agree everyone should own at least one Lever Action rifle. Preferably the 30-30 if you own only one. .357 is the other option if you own only one. I own both the 336 30-30 and the 1894C in .357 both are superior firearms.
$318.00 is a fair but not great deal on a NIB Marlin 336.
