I bought my first rifle a couple days ago, and after shooting it a few times, I decided to clean it for the first time and learn how to do everything. Well, I got it cleaned and while putting it back together, I was having trouble getting what I believe is the recoil spring back in, and I got frustrated, kept pushing, and its bent in 2 places. Basically, where can I get a new spring and I still have no idea how to put this thing back together

As bad as YouTube is for some things, its pretty handy when it comes to gun dis-and-reassembly. I would think that you could try to straighten your spring back out and it will still work. If you still need or want a new one you should easily be able to get it by contacting Marlin.

the bends arn't horribly bad, but I can't really get them to budge. Is there a trick when putting it back together? I can't get the spring to perfectly coil to allow me to slip that part back in.

If it is bent at all, it might not run right. Put it together and try it, but go ahead and order 2 or 3 of these. It happens. I have a marlin 60 left over from the glorious 80's with the 18 round tube that they quit making. Still shoots like a champ. I honestly never strip it that far unless it gets so dirty it just doesn't run right. I'll run 100's and 100's of rounds through it with nothing more than a bore snake job, taking a brush to the breech face and some lube. It always runs like a top and I never bend that hateful spring. Many folks feel the need to strip it down completely, but I'll run 1000's of rounds before I do. It runs great with no jams and shoots accurately, so that is all I want. Decades old and still giving modded 10/22's a run for their money. :)

Thanks ForumSurfer, I probably shouldn't have even bothered cleaning it after 100 rounds but I always hear how you need to clean it after every few shoots or whatever, but that sounds a lot better haha. Do you know why the bolt might be stuck though?

You said the spring had some kinks, correct? Last time I bent one, the bolt got stuck when I tried to straighten the spring and reuse it. Now I just make sure I keep an extra around. Don't feel bad, many people do it and you'll probably do it again. ;)

I gotta be honest. I based my choice of semi-auto .22lr on easy of dis and re-assembly. In two of the YouTube videos I saw of the Model 60, two different guys were working with bent up springs. That sealed the deal for me and I went with another popular model. For what it's worth, it didn't seem to bother these guys so maybe its not a big deal but that frequency told me getting that spring back in was going to be difficult.

It's simply a common, ham-fisted mistake. I don't blame your choices, though. My 60 was a gift to me from my father. We didn't have tons of money growing up, so even a new Marlin was huge deal. It's old, been used to death, had 10's of 1000's of rounds through it and there is some paint/blueing missing here and there. I wouldn't trade it for the world, though. My son enjoys shooting it.

I'm fortunate enough to be able to shoot on my property and I shoot quite a bit of 22's. I honestly think people tear down their 60's for an unnecessary cleaning entirely too often.

The same spring is used in the 795. A lot of places sold out after all the 795 sales at the end of last year(rebate). Numrich usually has them as well as MidwayUSA and Brownells.

Gun Digest Assembly/Disassembly books are helpful too. I would recommend them but they can be expensive to collect all of them. Gun Digest also has instructions on specific models of firearms too so you can get instructions on just the firearms you own.

Just bought three

from Numrich not long ago...they have new and used ones...there is about 60 cents difference in price I think.

I normally push the recoil spring and pin into the bolt assembly before I try to put the assembly back in the receiver. This seems to pretty much take away any chance of me bending the spring as I reassemble. A little different than what the You Tube video shows. Might try that. I had my dad to show me how to disassemble and reassemble though so he knew what he was doing.
