I have a Mauser 98 I thought I new something about. After looking on the web and watching some movies I'm in need of some info. My mauser has a step down barrel and a straight bolt handle. I can't find a picture of one anywhere. I did some research on the markings on the receiver and it said the rifle was made in the 40s in Austria. Every rifle I see on the Net has a bolt handle that is turned down. Can anybody shed any light on what model I may have?

Pics would be best. Does it say Mod 98 on the left (non bolt) side of the receiver? Being made is Austria would lead one to believe that you may have a K98 with the bolt from a VZ24. The bolt from a VZ24 will fit the K98 since they are the same except for the straight handle. Where did you get the rifle?

I received this rifle from my great Uncle along with a Luger that he retrieved right off the battle field. He sent 5 of each home before the practice was banned. I was a lucky one to get one of each.

I'll have to take another look at the rifle to see all the markings. I'll post some pics too. The only markings that stick out in my head (other than the swatiskas) is a Letter/number combo starting with "BRN" i think...
