Hi all
My neighbor bought a K98 Sporter 30-06. Origin Nazi markings no Russian recycling. Pretty decent stock, Nice bluing, medium throat erosion.
He put one round thru and could not extract the brass. Helped him get the action open. Brass had a perfectly round protrusion about the size of a #8 screw. Turns out who ever did the scope mounts drilled all the way thru to the chamber on both holes The brass fire formed into the rear most threaded hole. Im no gun smith but this sure doesn't smell right to me.
So my questions are was this a common Sportrizing procedure?
Is there a reliable fix and is it worth doing?

Thanks

No, and a new barrel is needed. There's no way to fix it, and no way to safely shoot it as-is. It's a bubba screw-up (screw-hole-up) and it's beyond repair without a new barrel. Welding will be mooted... it's not a good idea. Barrels are cheap enough.

"IF" no more barrels anywhere in the world could be found and you were on a desert island and needed it to work, you "could" screw in and then fully silver solder into place a machine screw that protrudes slightly into the chamber, and then run a chambering reamer into the chamber to remove the excess. That's "A bubba-fix heaped on top of a bubba screwup" but... it would work. But I would just rebarrel it.

Bottom line is that it's a wall hangar until rebarrelled.

If your neighbor has any recourse to the seller, he ought to take it. If the seller was aware of this, shame on him.

$100 for a barrel....

Then:

$100 for a gunsmith to rebarrel and headspace...

$100 to reblue the entire thing....

That's $500 including original purchase to build a rifle that he can then sell with ease for about, oh... $200...

Seller should hand him back his $200 and let him keep it, if he'll fix it up. The action and stock are a starting place for another attempt at a rifle. Then he'll only have $300 into a rifle that's worth $200.

(Seller equally ought to be grateful that the buyer was not hurt and calling up a good attorney.)

<sigh>... How I hate Bubbas.

Called my neighbor, he's going to take it back, pretty sure the selling neighbor never shot it either, he isn't a shooter. Apparently the non shooter neighbor bought it in a bar room deal.

I have a general rule of not making deals in a bar.

You could pull the barrel and sell the action, less stock,on gunbroker.com for more than your purchase price.Example-<http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=353134205>
