> Study: Long Guns Used in Md. Crime Once Every Two Days

> BALTIMORE (AP) - Semiautomatic rifles and shotguns are used in a crime in Maryland on average once every two days, according to a study released Wednesday by gun control advocates.
>
> The study is based on an analysis of crime statistics for 1998 through 2001. It said at least 789 semiautomatic long guns that can legally be sold in Maryland were traced to a crime in Maryland during that period.
>
> Delegate Neil Quinter, D-Howard, and CeaseFire Maryland, a gun control organization, said the study shows that Maryland needs to expand the 1994 law that bans the sale of semiautomatic pistols to include rifles and shotguns.
>
> Opponents have defeated bills that would expand the law, arguing that the ban would infringe on the rights of lawful gun owners and would do nothing to reduce crime because such guns are seldom used to commit crimes.

John Josselyn of Associated Gun Clubs of Baltimore has already filed a Public Information Act request with Ceasefire and the ATF asking for the source data. I'm curious to see how they react.

I actually read the Ceasefire "study." Even if they provide their source data, it's just BATF trace data, which

1) Was never intended to be used for statiscal purposes
2) Does not include all guns used in crimes
3) Does include guns not used in crimes
4) Includes technical "crimes" like improper transportation, or non-violent offenses like drug possesion
5) Have been shown to oversesimate actual criminal use by 1000% or more

Plus, they're expanding their definition of "Assault weapon" to include SKS's, M1 carbines, and Mini-14's. Yet they still can't come up with enough real statistics to argue their point, so they have to resort to this BS.

Their desperation would be encouraging, except for all the free publicity they get.
