there were 20 antis signed up to testify and 80 pro gun folke
i think there were only 30 antis in the whole room
the remaining 250 were pro gun
and the delegates knew it
Quinter (the AWB sponsor) kicked it off by announcing an amendment to modify
the current proposed assault weapon bill to "only" extend the current federal ban
(just like what happend in the Senate in DC)
Sarah Brady was there testifying about the good work the 1994 ban had accomplished and how here family were hunters
MMM/CFMD Leah Barrett testified that she wanted the full ban without Quinters amendment. She got really shrill and really condensending with the chairman of the committee. She also claimed a Feb 2004 survey said 77% of Marylanders want an AWB.
She was countered by a delegate asking about the Maryland Public TV survey where in 94 % of respondents DON'T want an AWB extention
John Lott was there advising the progun delegates
The antis were broadsided by some rather piercing questioning and discovered to be professional anti gun advocates. The VPCs "data" was roundly quashed and a letter from the FBI advising that there is no way to separate AWs from rifles used in crime was read.
The Maryland State Police testified against the need to further extend our current assault rifle regulations
Sandy Abrams knocked one out of the park when he deflated the anti's Mac 11 assault weapon murder stories with testimony that announced that Mac 11s were assault pistols and banned in MD since 1996
When he had the pro gun folke stand up to be recognized, i would say 80 % of the house stood. He also asked for a show of hands of people that would hunt with an "assault rifle"?
over a hundred hands up for that one
The debate is prolly still going on
