MD-surrounding states

One thing which could be important for you living in PA and working in MD is income tax reciprocity. Specifically, if you live in Pa and work in Md then you pay Pa income taxes directly. You don't have to file a non-resident form in MD to get money back and then a resident form in Pa etc etc. You will simply pay PA income tax as if you were working in Pa. This is really cool and makes life easier in April.

Quick Facts about PA

Not a complete list, but rather a (hopefully) useful snapshot:

Guns
*PA is a Shall-Issue state. $19.00 for a 5 year permit. There is no training requirement, and you do not need to list your weapon(s) on your permit.
*This state has an active hunting culture.

Taxes
*PA does not tax purchases of food or clothing. The state also doesn't place a levy on the fair market value of your automobile. The yearly registration fee for your car will cost $36.00. Annual state safety inspections are required.
*The state current Personal Income tax rate is 2.8%.
[This rate may increase in the future as Governor Ed Rendell - "The Brooklyn guinea" - attempts to shore up a broken educational system with more tax dollars. Remember, this is the fellow who, during his tenure as mayor of Philadelphia, had such poorly performing public schools under his purview that the state stepped in and assumed control.]
*Local tax rates vary by jurisdiction.

Real Estate Outlook
*Housing is affordable even in the immediate outskirts of desirable urban areas. Lancaster County is expensive, but there's a reason for that....

Climate - weather
*We are a genuine four-season state. Period.

Climate - people
*The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania consists of Philadelphia on one side, Pittsburgh on the other, and Alabama in between. Understand?

castle question:

md is a runaway state.

va is too, BUT

it's a commonwealth state, which in effect means you can't predict what will happen from one court case to the next. more based on case law and human experience.

the nice DA's (actually called CA's here in virginia - commonwealth's attorney) in Fairfax Co, Loudon Co, and Prince William Co, will pretty much give you a high five for blowing away a bad guy and move on. Arlington County and Alexandria County will be confused as to why you'd want to hurt anyone who entered your house, cause they would never do anything like that, especially since it could be the gradener or the au pair... they'll lock you up for being a gun owner if only the state would let them.

this, according to 25 year existence in this state, and recent discussions with several higher-up LEOs in prince william, loudon, and fairfax counties.
