Look what followed me home today! 700 BDL in .243, probably 1980 manufacture. From the bolt face, it looks barely used. Came with a cheap Simmons scope mounted in Leupold rings, hard case, sling, and 70 rounds of ammo for $425. Needs to be fully broken down and deep cleaned, and the cheap 4X tossed. I'm happy!

Thanks! I like the older Remingtons, and I really like the .243 Winchester. Have a nice Vortex Viper HS 4-16x44 to put on it; just need some 30mm rings. Can’t wait to see how she shoots.

Very nice. I have one of the cheaper parked ones with the plastic stock, which I replaced with a laminated one from Boyd's. What a great round in a great rifle! Mine prefers Winchester 100 grain power points.

So I tore it down last night. First to go were the scope and mount. Pulled the barreled action from the stock. The action and trigger were thick with old lubricant that had turned gooey. Pulled the trigger and soaked it in mineral spirits while I cleaned up the action. There was some surface rust on both sides of the barrel below the line of the stock; came right off with fine steel wool and gun oil. Did a basic disassembly of the bolt; the firing pin channel was also full of gunk. Once the action was properly cleaned, I set to work on the trigger. Flushed it out with spray degreaser and compressed air, then reinstalled and adjusted it. Now it breaks like glass right at three pounds. New DNZ mount is on order; should be here by the weekend ...

looks sweet. what stand is that? i've not seen one like that before.

Walkalong

You've got a classic right there, I used to oogle over them in the catalog back when I had no chance of owning one. Those and K-22s.

And Winchester Model 70s and S&W Model 27s and Sako Finnbears and Colt Pythons and...so on and so forth. I use to spend a lot of time perusing the various offerings in the back of Gun Digest too!

Lohman Sight-Vise. I've had it for a lot of years; don't think it's still available under that name. I do not use it at the range; strictly on the workbench for mounting scopes and cleaning. It's not designed as a shooting rest. Here's another that's pretty close:

Hope to get out early Saturday morning, before it gets too hot ... and hope it shoots as good as it looks!

Clean gun! I love that era- BDL, they just look nice! Nice buy in a good caliber .

I have an UNFIRED 1980's 700 BDL in 7mm Rem Mag with a Redfield Widefield scope on it in my safe that my Dad gave me with no box or papers... but I know my Dad has never shot it. Problem is it's a left hander, so I'll never shoot it. :(

Since there's no real sentimental value in a gun that hasn't been shot nor is it set up for me to use it, at some point after he passes I'll sell it off and get a 1980's 700 BDL 7-mag right hander for myself in his memory.

Stay safe!

Or you could learn to shoot left handed-it's not a bad skill to have. After all, it's easier to switch the gun over to left handed when that big buck comes out on the right side of your stand. And half the corners in the world go to the left....

ah thanks for the info. gotta look into that.

And ... she shoots! 85 degrees and sunny this morning. Sighting in I shot multiple 3-shot groups that were right at one inch or slightly under with cheap Federal ammo ... old stuff that came with the gun. I am very pleased! With a bit of load work-up, I ought to be able to consistently shoot sub-MOA!
