I've been there before. About 20 miles from me. People seem to be getting more brazen these days.

The Henry Co. Sheriff's Office says they are searching for three men who robbed Southern Gun Inc., in Collinsville earlier today.

Investigators tell 10 On Your Side that three men came into the store this afternoon carrying handguns.

They then forced one clerk to the floor and hancuffed him.

The trio then filled backpacks they were carrying full of pistols from the store.

Investigators aren't sure how many pistols were stolen, but are saying it was several.

The men ran from the store and investigators are searching for them.

I'm confused. I thought people had guns at gun stores? I think this one goes to the guns are not a magic talisman thread.

Was the clerk the sole person in the shop at the time?

And was he or was he not carrying at the time? If not, he's got some 'splaining to do...

also: this is the first time I've ever heard of a successful robbery of a gun store.

I'm expecting that this means zip-tied?

Yup. No telling what went down inside the store, as far as the exact circumstances. Did the clerk draw a gun? Did he hesitate to fire? Was he oblivious of intent until they drew on him?

I suppose y'all recall Bloomberg's 'sting' operations and such, supposedly trying to stem the tide of illegal guns to NYC. Incidents like this are how criminals prefer to get their guns.

A clerk will, no matter if he works in a gun store or in a seven-11, most likely not risk his life to protect the shops inventory from armed robbers. The guy is alive today, and if he had drawn a weapon and started a gun fight with three armed robbers he would most likely have died. I know it sucks to see the bad guys win, but he did the right thing. I sure hope the police find the guys though :(

agreed. Also, I have a feeling that by the time he realized what was going on, it was too late. He probably realized they had the upper hand by then and didn't want to draw and get shot. I'll bet better awareness and more training would have helped.

At the end of the day nobody got killed, which is good... but it does suck that now there are more illegal guns out there that could potentially be used to kill (afterall, it's logical to assume that those who obtain guns illegally don't have legal intentions for them :( )

You have to admit though, those guys must have balls the size of watermelons. Sheesh.

I've heard of successful robberies of gun shops at night when they were closed, but never during the day when there was a clerk present.

I think the fact that the clerk was out gunned and probably caught by surprise is the reason he didn't try to resist. Three vs one is bad odds, and if they've already drawn down on him before he recognized them as a threat, the odds are even worse.

He may have also not been carrying. Not every gun enthusiast as a CCP.

This for some reason reminded me of the guy who owned the gun store and fought them off with a legal machine gun.

The gunshop owner with the machine gun was in Micanopy, FL. I bet that was a rude awakening for the bad guys.
Harry Beckwith Guns. You can still see the bullet holes in the front of the store.

Around here the bad guys just smash stolen vehicles into the front of the shops overnight. Most every gun shop in the area has had this happen at least once.

That's crazy I've been shooting at Micanopy Shooting Sports for a while now, and never heard anybody talk about it. I've only been in Harry's a handful of times though.

Property is not worth getting killed over, or getting someone else killed over - that includes guns.

Policy of our local store is to not resist if robbery occurs, unless one has to, in order to protect life. Being safe is the primary objective, stuff can be replaced.

I beg to differ over that "property is not worth getting killed over". If you read that piece about Harry Beckwith, he risked his life for his guns, knowing they would likely be used to kill others.

However, in this case, the clerk was likely surprised and facing high odds- It may be worth risking your life, however, but not when the risk is unlikely to stop the criminals and you end up dead. So, I'm probably agreeing with you, I'm just disagreeing with how you said it.

Similar thing happened here a few days ago

A north-side gun store was robbed Thursday afternoon with the assailant making off with cash, several firearms and a vehicle that belonged to an employee of the business.

Topeka police and Shawnee County sheriff's officers responded at about 3:30 p.m. to J.M. Co., 3030 N.W. Topeka Blvd., the site of the robbery.

The business is on the south side of a one-story white brick building located west across the parking lot from a Falley's supermarket.

An employee reported the robber entered the business and was able to obtain a handgun, said police Lt. Dean McWilliams. The robber then demanded money, firearms and the keys to an employee's vehicle.

The robber left the area in an unknown direction in the employee's silver 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche that had been parked in a lot just outside the business.

The vehicle bore Kansas dealer license plate D1580-5.

No injuries were reported.

The robber was described as a white man wearing a camouflage jacket and khaki pants.

Here is the follow up. "Obtained a handgun inside"

What began as the robbery of a gun shop and the theft of a pickup truck in Topeka ended in a high-speed chase west of Denver with the driver's arrest after he fired a shot at sheriff's deputies, authorities said Friday.

Jacob Anthony Avila, 22, was booked into the Jefferson County Jail in Golden, Colo., in connection with the attempted murder of a peace officer, said Jim Shires, spokesman for sheriff's department.

Deputies recovered a pickup, which had been reported stolen just before 3:30 p.m. Thursday at J.M. Co., 3030 N.W. Topeka Blvd.

Topeka police Lt. Dean McWilliams said a man had entered the business, obtained a handgun inside, then demanded money, firearms and the keys to an employee's pickup. The robber drove away in the pickup, which had been parked outside.

Shires said a Jefferson County, Colo., deputy saw the truck at about 11:45 p.m. Thursday in a construction area on Interstate 70 west of Denver and confirmed through a computer check it had been reported stolen in Topeka.

Shires said deputies were preparing to arrest the driver when Avila fired a gunshot and the pickup sped away, reaching speeds of 100 miles per hour. No one was wounded.

An Idaho Springs, Colo., police officer subsequently threw a "stop stick" device into the pickup's path on I-70. The stop stick deflated the tires on the right side of the pickup, causing the driver to slow down, Shires said. The pickup then left the highway.

Shires said one deputy drove beside the pickup and intentionally struck it, causing it to spin, while another rammed his patrol car head-on into the pickup to keep Avila from escaping.

Deputies arrested Avila and seized a handgun from inside the pickup, Shires said.

Avila and the deputy were taken to a hospital, where both were treated, then released.

My wife often runs our store while I am away on business. She has been told if robbed to just let them take what they want. The vaults with the machine guns and silencers are not in the retail area and are biometric controlled to me only. We have countermeasures in place so she knows to do what they say and do what she must do to stay alive. It does not hurt that she is a former federal agent and carrys a Glock 18 also.

Noted - and your point is taken, but I can't say I agree.

I am armed and usualy working in the back room when I am there. I have to ask myself what is the right way to handle an armed robbery if I note it going on in the sales area. I have little doubt I could stop the robbery from happening - what I question is wether one of my friends is going to catch a bullet because I decided the merchandise was worth fighting over. Or for that matter - myself, or a customer. Their safety is all that matters to me .

If your alone, have a machine gun, and think the stuff is worth your life, then go for it. Just wait till I get the heck out of the way please.

Well, just because you are surrounded by guns and even have one on your hip means nothing if someone surprises you, draws a gun, aims at your head and says lay your weapon on the floor slowly and walk away. Come on, how many tough guys on here are going to try something when someone you never met, who could be a suicidal nut, aims a gun at your head and tells you to do something? Isn't this the method police use to catch a lot of crooks? Aim their gun at them and tell them to drop it, get down slowly, etc. I bet most police officers are VERY glad that this method (usually) works. Really, what could you do in the above situation? Especially with two armed men waving a gun in your face? You go for your weapon, they may back down and you win, or they may open fire as soon as they guess your intention. Of course there's always the he-man out there who explains how all the rest of us are wussies and how he would pull out his Wilson-customized 1911 and a Bushmaster AR and just go to town, jump through the air, have a good old fashion Hollywood shootout, BANG!BANG!BANG! YEAH! U-S-A! U-S-A-! U-S-A! (Unfortunately I know someone just like this).
