Good evening all.

I'm starting to use more H110 than I used to, and it's not running well in my Lee Perfect Powder Measure. After charging 100 cases, there's 15-20 grains of H110 leaked out of the side of the measure. On it's way to leaking, the grains of powder also bind the measure quite tightly after a few throws.

I've tried looser and tighter on the adjustment screw to no avail. I've also tried shimming the polymer wiper for better contact with the drum. The measure works fine with every other powder I've used, and it quite consistent, just really stiff and messy. So:

1) Any tips on adjusting the Lee Perfect Powder Measure for H110?

2) Any suggestions for a different powder measure that handles H110 with aplomb?

RCBS Chargemaster. I use lot of H110 and it leaks out of every measure except the Chargemaster. I have very minimal leakage w/ the Lee PAD. And it happens to throw a perfect charge for a 357 so I use it quite a bit. H110 is extremely fine and will work it's way out of any tiny gaps.

My uniflow has zero leakage issues...

I have no experience with the measure youre using. Any way to just tape up the gaps?

IMO: Any powder measure, except a Lee, handles fine ball powder perfectly.

Just pick one.

The Lee PPM handles almost every powder perfectly. But every one is an entity unto itself. Mine works fine w/ all powders except ones like H110. I've had almost all of the more expensive measures. They all had their own issues which is why I got rid of them.

My Uniflow doesn't leak with H110. I'm sure the Hornady, Redding, Lyman, etc. would all do fine. Like rc said, pretty much any measure from any reputable brand except Lee probably won't leak.

My Redding and Hornady powder measures work just fine with H-110 and other fine powders. If your Lee chokes on H-110/Win. 296, don't ever put Accurate #9 in it......

Hope this helps.

Thank you everyone, I guess I'm shopping for a new or used powder measure.

Cheers

Another vote for the Uniflow not leaking.

After having problems with my Lee PPM leaking H110, I bought the Uniflow and the first thing I did was test it with H110. No problems.

I have a Dillon, so not much help to the OP but this may be useful to someone. The bar on my measure would get stiff and jam with H110 due to powder grains getting in the gap above the spacer and/or between the spacer and the small powder bar. The solution which I found on a forum somewhere is to shim the top side of the spacer with packing tape.

Apply a piece of tape across the top of the spacer and burnish it down. You only need to cover the area around the powder hole, not the entire length of the spacer. With a razor blade or hobby knife cut the tape around the edges and in the opening. Cut it close to get all the tape and adhesive overhang. When reassembling, the powder bar should still move freely but with less vertical free play. You may need to try different thicknesses of tape or use 2 layers in order to get it just right.

No problems with H110 since doing this.

neither my Lee auto drum or auto disk leaks h110, and I use that powder often. My ppm, however, leaks a lot of different fine powders.

Perfect Powder Measure Leakage

To eliminate leakage, disassemble the measure and clean thoroughly. Dust with powdered graphite or mica, and re-assemble. Powdered graphite is available at most hardware stores (often used as a dry lubricant for locks). Work the lever back and forth to spread the powdered lubricant over the mating surfaces. Disassemble and observe the wear pattern on the cone shaped mating surface between the metering chamber and body. There should be even wear across the whole surface. If not, dust with lube and try again, with the tension screw slightly tighter (or looser, depending on the appearance). If you can't get an even wear pattern return the measure to the factory for repair/replacement.

Our address is:

Lee Precision Inc,

Hartford, WI 53027.

To get the proper tension on the screw that holds the rotor assembly to the base, place the lever in the up position and tighten the screw until you cannot move the lever up and down. With an empty powder measure, begin loosening the screw until the lever begins to move downward. Once this occurs, you have achieved the correct tension.

25 years of reloading with the RCBS Uniflow, using all kinds of powder, including mega-pounds of H110 for reloads in my .44 Magnums. No leakage, ever....with any powder.

Another vote for a rotary drop like a Hornady (I own and run H110 and W269 thru mine no issues) or a RCBS, Redding, etc.

I used to use an ancient Ideal No. 5 measure for pistol loads, and H110 gave me fits. It bound up the drum and made life difficult. Solution was to use another measure, a B&M Visible in my case.

I have 2 RCBS uniflows but they are dedicated for rifle.

neither my Lee auto drum or auto disk leaks h110
Same for me, no issues with the Lee Pro Disk or Autodrum.

The Lee PPm is frar from "Perfect" but I am still happy with mine for the price.

Nope, it's going to leak with H110.

RCBS Uniflow works great.

I will answer the next question, "I'm feeling some resistance as the Uniflow cuts my extruded rifle powder when charging. Is there a powder measure that doesn't cut extruded powder as badly as the Uniflow?" Yes, it's the Lee PPM!

In an interesting turn of events, I found a way to improve the Lee PPM somewhat while I shop for a Uniflow.

I'd already tuned it per Lee's instructions, and it was still binding as grains entered the interface between the drum and the housing. I cut and filed two kerfs in conical seating surface of the housing , ~10mm behind the powder hopper orifice, and ~10mm behind the drop orifice (not between them).

Now, when a particle gets jammed in the interface, it quickly hits a kerf, and leaks out. The result is that the measure still leaks, but the binding is about 90% reduced.

Yes, the LPPM actually dispenses extruded powder better than my RCBS Uniflow.
No binding or cutting,One of life's little mysterys.;)
