Mexican federal agents have arrested four Iraqis trying to sneak into the United States without proper documents, the government said Monday.

Wasim Francis Schamoun and Ivan Yalda, both 23, and Refon Chlil Oraha and Thaer Salem Yelda, both 27, were found on a bus in the northern city of Navajoa after police received an anonymous tip, the attorney general's office said in a statement.

The Iraqis were in Mexico illegally, the statement said.

Officials on Monday said they were investigating the background of the four and trying to determine how they got into Mexico. The four have family names that are common among Iraq's minority Christian community.

Many undocumented Iraqi nationals have been captured in Mexico en route to the U.S. border. None has been found to have had any links to terrorism.

Yes, it's a bad sign that folks can get all the way to this side of the world and try to cross the border, but it's pretty likely that this group wasn't a threat.

Iraqi Christians (either the Chaldeans or Assyrians) are most likely just wanting to get the heck out of Iraq and find a job in a Chaldean-run liquor store in San Diego. Heck, I'd say the average Kaldani/Ashuri is probably less of a threat than most any other nationals sneaking across. The shop where I used to buy beer in San Diego was run by Kaldanis, I kept meaning to go visit their church over in the El Tejon suburb.

But if they can sneak in, their radicalized neighbor can probably do the same thing, so I agree that it's bad in principle.

Just wanted to put in a good word for the Chaldeans; they run a good suds-shop, and they were good workers in Iraq. Lumping them in with Arab Muslims is inaccurate, and I'm sure they wouldn't appreciate it. Iraq has around a dozen major groups, only one really hates us, and another is kinda ticked at us, but the Kurds/Turcomans/Yezidi/Chaldeans/Assyirans/Mandeans/Pars/etc are just trying to get by.

Assuming that you're being facetious:

Seriously, if we're going to let anybody at all into the country, why not Iraqi Chaldeans and Assyrians?

They're persecuted for their religion (Catholic and Orthodox Christianity, respectively), they support us in the war in Iraq, they have strong immigrant communities where they find immediate gainful employment, and (coincidentally) their religious and cultural values are easy to assimilate into American culture.

Yes, I'd greatly prefer that they did things the legal route by applying for Refugee Status, but compared to all the other folks in the world who could be showing up on our doorstep, they're pretty good people.

You know, that whole speech posted by Longeyes really makes me sick.

Bush apparently thinks this is all some kind of big joke. The more he talks, the more it is clear he is an idiot. I don't mean that more as a statement of the obvious than as an insult. Why can't his own people just tell him to shut up when he starts running his mouth like that?

There is no way I could be friends with someone who is diametrically opposed to my politics and world viewpoint. If the Bushes can do it, it is because they are not so different from the Clintons after all.
