MI - List of Municipalities Violating Purchase Permit Law

Last I knew, Ferndale has restricted hours for the 'Safety Inspection.' Having said that, the detective that typcially performs the inspections is great. I've never once taken a weapon to him and the first words out of his mouth weren't, "Oh, I love these!".

Also, FWIW, the public library is still posted no weapons and the text specifically does NOT exempt CPL holders.

Midland charges money.

I paid them $6 to register my kid's first pistol a couple weeks ago. You don't get a permit if they don't get the money.

Not that I want someone to get hurt I'd like to see a gun 'blow up' after a 'safety inspection' and have the owner sue the municipality that did the inspection. Chances are though that there is some kind of governmental immunity in place to protect them.

I think it'd be funny to bring in a fairly realistic-looking replica gun (maybe one of the better airsoft pistols) and see if the "inspector" even notices.

That won't happen, unfortunately.... it specifically states on the back of the "safety inspection" green card, the following...

"A cursory inspection has been made of this pistol presented.
A check for operational or mechanical defects has not been made of this pistol."

I sure wish most days that as an engineer,i could twist the laws of physics and mathematics, like lawyers, politicians and judges can twist laws of the land and the constitution.... :banghead:

In December, Allen Park was 2 days a week between like 10:00 and 3:00 for registration, I have a CPL so I do not klnow about the permit part

Riverview is bad about "safety inspections;" you have to make an appointment with a detective, all of whom seem to always be in court. Very annoying.

Once upon a time Ogemaw County used to charge $5, but that has been gone for at least 5 to 6 years. Now there is no charge and they will take care of you during normal bussiness hours and then some. Fast and Friendly.

I just moved to Indiana from Michigan.

I was in washtenaw county.

They would issue permits M-F 8am-5pm. At the county sherriff dept.

However:

You were required to take a basic knowledge test. 15~20 questions.

After that they would issue the permit to purchase the same day.

They then made you go to the cashier to pay the fee. 10 buck notary and a 5 buck other fee.

Grand Haven City is no problem

The GH Dept of Public Safety is swell. They invite you in past the locked buzzer door, give the test, let you sit at the nice lady's desk while she notarizes and prints out the green card and talks about the weather, then the other nice lady tells you about the test (especially # 6 "reporting a stolen pistol") and you pay the $10 notary fee and look at the tommy gun in the showcase before you leave through the buzzer door.

Be sure to see the genuine Thompson submachine gun, dropped on the street by a bank robber in 1933, when he was fired upon by armed shopkeepers as he ran to the getaway car.

I copped a look at the "Notary fee reciepts" book. There were 3 Pistol Purchase Permits issued in the last two months, but there were two other CPL guys in the office getting serial number checks when I was there.

Took my new gat back this morning for a serial # check, and they were friendly, prompt and invited me in again.

I have a question, and do realize that it is slightly off topic, but don’t know where else to ask.

When going through this process, the PD require one to swear an oath on certain things such as being a citizen… etc.

I asked the guy what would happen if I didn’t swear, because the Bible said not to swear, but instead “let my yes be yes, and my no be no”. His response was that I would be denied. Is there a way around this?

I know this may sound kind of silly to some, but I don’t see why they can’t just accept a simple “yes” instead of an “I swear”, especially since it is a matter of religion.

BOT:
GRPD doesn’t have a waiting period, and charges $5. You can get the purchase permit, and be registered in the same day provided you can make the trip from the store to the PD before they close.

poor richard,

To swear in this instance doesn't mean to curse. Besides the only cursing that is forbidden is taking the Lord's name in vain.

define swear: to affirm- to declare or affirm solemnly and formally as true; "Before God I swear I am innocent"

Newaygo Co. used to limit "inspections" to a certain time of the day (1-3 iirc) and only on certain days. I don't know about now. Been awhile since I bought a handgun. The staff is always friendly.

You cannot be forced to swear..but you can be asked to affirm your intention to tell the truth. If he made you, he was wrong.

(James 5:12: But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation. )

Southfield violates the inspection/registration. Their days/hours are:

Tuesdays: 9 to 11am
Thursdays: 1 to 4pm

You may wish to call them for exact hours (248) 796-5500

Hey, porterdog, I've not been in the Ferndale Library but that's not good. Sthfld Library is not posted.

I was "warned" by an attorney that libraries may not be good places to carry. I'm trying to think why now and I can't. Oh, well. C'mon over to Sthfld Library - no one is ever there anyway...

Thanks Barbara. Next Q then. What do I do about it if I am refused under such circumstances?

answerguy,

Take notice of Barbara's post. I wasn't referring to cursing, but was instead referring to taking an oath in affirmation.

Richard, I'm not sure..if its just a deputy, I'd ask to speak to the Chief, or whoever is in charge. I'd take a copy of the applicable law with me, just in case.. you'd think they'd know the law, but that's not always the case.

Or in my case, I just ignore what they say, and say what I want. "Do you swear.." "I'll tell the truth." They don't even catch it. :)

Ignore Ferndale library's signs. They were sued and lost but leave the signs up. You cannot get in any trouble for going into Ferndale library with a firearm, despite what they may say.

FWIW, Ferndale is, in my not so humble opinion, is corrupt and vindictive and should never be trusted not to try to screw over gun owners..I've seen them in action and its ugly.

answerguy,

I have a friend that has told me that the Livonia PD enforces a 3 day waiting period on obtaining a purchase permit. I'm trying to get him to post her, but his computer is currently down. Hopefully He'll be posting within a few days.

Lansing limits to three days/week, I believe Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and charges $5.

These limits are clearly posted in the entrance to the police station, which is less than a block from the AG's office (or so I presume, not having mapped out every gov't downtown). Nothing like open defiance right next door, eh?:fire:
