Mid-sized Glock in .45 ACP?

First off: I'm not terribly interested in the .45 GAP cartridge. It just seems to be a knockoff of the .45 ACP, but is a milimeter shorter. The relative lack of ammunition, higher price, and questionable commercial viability essentially eliminates that choice for me.

That said, I currently have in my collection two Glocks, a Glock 19 and Glock 26 (the Compact and Subcompact 9mm models, respectively). I've been looking at a .45 ACP-chambered pistol recently, have tried several different makes of 1911, and just wasn't satisfied with the gun, how it fit in my hand, how the mechanisms didn't seem to be lefty-friendly, and how expensive they start for even a "basic" gun.

I'm familiar with the operation of the Glock mechanisms, so I'd like to stick with something I can more or less use on instinct if need be. Not to mention that it's good-to-go right out of the box.

The full-size frames seem a bit too large for me (I'm 6', 200 pounds, 23 years old...I can handle just about any handgun out there unless it rattles my jaw apart, but this is just a matter of comfort and balance), and the subcompact and ultra-compact G36 are just too small for me, particularly if I'd want to shoot .45 ACP regularly. The recoil on the itty-bitty ones is rather fierce.

It does not appear that Glock makes any mid-sized .45 ACP-chambered pistols (i.e. on the same frame as the G19), based on a review of their website and asking a few local FFLs. I suppose I'll have to play around with the full-sized one a bit more.

Does anyone know why Glock wouldn't offer a mid-sized .45 ACP? The magazines between the full and compact 9mm Glocks interchange just fine (though perhaps the slightly shorter ones for the compact pistols might not fit in the full-size frame, but the full-size ones will definitely fit in the compact frame, though they may stick out a bit), why can't the same be true about the .45 ACP ones? I can't think of any real reason why they wouldn't offer them...

Thoughts? Ideas? In the event that the full-sized one just doesn't work for me (I'll probably be able to adjust to it, but just in case...), are there any other brands or manufacturers (Sig? H&K? Springfield?) that make similar pistols (DAO similar to "Safe Action", simple controls, left-handed friendly, minimal manual safeties, etc.) in .45 ACP?

I'm with you, I love the G23/19 size, but alas, no real .45ACP.

There's the G30, which is technically a subcompact (I think), but ends up being bigger. I guess there just isn't much middle ground between that and the 21, or at least not enough to justify a new model.

Maybe the H&K USP Compact in 45? I've never held one, but maybe it would work.

The G30 with a mag inserted is closer in size to a G19 than a G26. Have you tried a G30? The recoil is quite mild for a .45 acp, IMHO.

I've been told that the G36 (single-stack .45 ACP) is close enough to the size of a G19 that they can use the same holsters, but I haven't verified that yet. I just passed on the Glock .45's and went with a Taurus PT145 Millennium Pro. It fits my hand much better, and I get 10+1 rounds of .45 in a really compact package.

Hmm. Well, aren't the Glock 36's only a single-stack, skinny pistol? I can't imagine it's dimensions would be anything remotely close to that of the G19...but I'll have to see when I go up to the range today.

(No, I don't really need to, nor can I really affording spending more money...oh well.)

(Other note: Hmm. Now that I've switched my domain's MX records to point a new host, now I'm getting emailed updates from THR, while I wasn't before. Excellent.)

"I've been told that the G36 (single-stack .45 ACP) is close enough to the size of a G19 that they can use the same holsters..."

Don't believe it.
They're close but not identical.
I own two of each (G19s and G36s) and it simply ain't so.

Some G19 holsters will fit the G36, but not all, ESPECIALLY if the holster in question has a thumb break.

Sometimes even the holster manufacturers are unaware of the differences. For instance, Aker recently sent me a shoulder rig for the G19 which they said was guaranteed to fit the G36, but it wasn't even close, and the thumb break strap couldn't be forced to fit around the rear of the G36 slide, though it was actually slightly loose on the G19.
