First off: I'm not terribly interested in the .45 GAP cartridge. It just seems to be a knockoff of the .45 ACP, but is a milimeter shorter. The relative lack of ammunition, higher price, and questionable commercial viability essentially eliminates that choice for me.
That said, I currently have in my collection two Glocks, a Glock 19 and Glock 26 (the Compact and Subcompact 9mm models, respectively). I've been looking at a .45 ACP-chambered pistol recently, have tried several different makes of 1911, and just wasn't satisfied with the gun, how it fit in my hand, how the mechanisms didn't seem to be lefty-friendly, and how expensive they start for even a "basic" gun.
I'm familiar with the operation of the Glock mechanisms, so I'd like to stick with something I can more or less use on instinct if need be. Not to mention that it's good-to-go right out of the box.
The full-size frames seem a bit too large for me (I'm 6', 200 pounds, 23 years old...I can handle just about any handgun out there unless it rattles my jaw apart, but this is just a matter of comfort and balance), and the subcompact and ultra-compact G36 are just too small for me, particularly if I'd want to shoot .45 ACP regularly. The recoil on the itty-bitty ones is rather fierce.
It does not appear that Glock makes any mid-sized .45 ACP-chambered pistols (i.e. on the same frame as the G19), based on a review of their website and asking a few local FFLs. I suppose I'll have to play around with the full-sized one a bit more.
Does anyone know why Glock wouldn't offer a mid-sized .45 ACP? The magazines between the full and compact 9mm Glocks interchange just fine (though perhaps the slightly shorter ones for the compact pistols might not fit in the full-size frame, but the full-size ones will definitely fit in the compact frame, though they may stick out a bit), why can't the same be true about the .45 ACP ones? I can't think of any real reason why they wouldn't offer them...
Thoughts? Ideas? In the event that the full-sized one just doesn't work for me (I'll probably be able to adjust to it, but just in case...), are there any other brands or manufacturers (Sig? H&K? Springfield?) that make similar pistols (DAO similar to "Safe Action", simple controls, left-handed friendly, minimal manual safeties, etc.) in .45 ACP?
