I was trying to find some good info on cheap Dog town bullets by midway but some swear at them, and some swear by them. So, thought I'd do my own research. I bought a box of .224 in 55gr and started with an unknown (to me) powder. I heard that Hodgden CFE223 was a good powder so I tried some. The results were great!!!
I normally use 25.2 of H335 behind a 55gr Nosler Ballistic Tip BT. I get approx 3150 fps and am under 1/2" groups @ 100 yds. My over all length is 2.28". This load "smokes" ground squirrels.
I worked up a load starting at 25.5gr of CFE223 behind the 55gr Dog Towns, and ended at 27.5gr. Overall length for these is 2.20". These were fired in a 1 in 9 twist barrel. All groups were under 3/4" @ 100 yds but the 27.5gr measured 5/16" so I thought "good enough" for whistle pigs. All of the holes in the paper were clean with crisp edges showing no tumbling or jacket separation as had been rumored. Not sure of the velocity, but it must be close to 3000 fps.(Last time I used my chrono, I shot it,DUH.) I hit a squirrel this AM and it looked like it blew up from the inside!!! I did NOT have to change my scope setting as these zeroed in the same place as my Noslers with H335. I am writing this more for beginners, so if it sounds a little "Simple", it was meant to be. Most of you reading this forgot more about reloading that I ever knew. But just thought someone could use this info. Good Luck.
PS. I use commercial grade brass (Hornady) not military.

Yep, welcome, indeed.

I'm north of 70 years now, so could also qualify as one of your "namesakes".

Your experience with the Dogtown bullets parallels mine, but I've been running them much faster from my .22-250..... up around the 3800-fps mark.

The 55 hollowpoints shoot superbly from my heavy-barrel CZ rifle, grouping five rounds consistently under 1/2" from 100 yards.

I now have a 500-round box of the 55 softpoint Dogtowns for comparison tests, but I'm very much content with the performance of the hollowpoint version.

As you noted, they are highly effective on ground squirrels, and the price is attractive when hundreds of rounds may be fired on days when the squirrels are active. (On one excursion, I fired over 400 rounds in a single day from five rifles.... one could call it a "target-rich environment"! LOTS of squirrels courting sudden death.)

mine uses the midsouth varmint nightmare bullets, don't have any idea who makes the bullets, but they sure do shoot.

savage m12 in 223rem, 55gr hp with a load of benchmark, 5shots in .4" at 100 yards

o'l fart - you hit it on the head when you said "some swear at them, and some swear by them".

I'm in your camp. I tried 'em & like 'em.

And as others have said - welcome to thr. :D

Dog Town Bullets

Wow! I didn't think I would get any feed back on my post, and so quickly. It's good to know there are so many shooters and reloading buffs out there. Just to add a little to my "Dog Town Bullet" post, I shoot a Rem. 700 CDL in 223 with a 1 in 12 twist and a Savage 10/110 Predator with a 1 in 9 twist. Both handle these and many other bullets very well. The Savage is the most accurate rifle "out of the box" I have ever owned.

Welcome Ol Fart.

Your name cracked me up. its seems by now I should be more mature but naaaaaahhh.

It's good to know there are so many shooters and reloading buffs out there

Youve come to the right place. Guaranteed to turn you into a reloading nerd (if you're not already) in 6 mos. or less.

They're made by Nosler for Midway.
"...some swear at them, and some swear by them..." Same thing gets said about Midway period. Nothing like 'em up here. Mind you, there's a lot of stuff like that. Nothing like the CMP either. Our idiot government destroyed thousands of perfectly good No. 4 and 7Lee-Enfields and FN C1A1's rather than sell 'em. Sold or more likely gave the remaining parts to Numrich.

I have shot thousands, and still have Thousands, of the Dogtown HP's

They are my Go-To bullet... Most accurate of anything i load... and all shot thru 2 AR15 rifle's

Still wanna try the Soft Points but havent Yet

Nice post and Welcome.....

I still like the dogtowns. Attached photo shows dogtown groups from this morning. From left to right: three, four, five, and five. I'm only using 21.9 grains of IMR 3031 with these bullets. Interesting is the second group - the only difference being tighter necks! I still haven't figured that one out.

Yes, I think the Dogtown bullets and Varmint Nightmare bullets sold by Midsouth are the same........all made by Nosler.

For my limited capabilities, the Dogtowns perform nearly as well as Match Kings in my ARs. I buy them by the thousands when there is a deal on shipping or discounted. But, my favorite flavors have been unavailable for so long I have almost quit checking on them.
