Military handsignals

I remember a gesture that was left hand held slightly cupped, palm down, a few inches above the right hand, which was presenting the impudent digit.
Meaning was "cover me, I'm screwed!" :D

LOL with all due respect.. that was funny :) I didn't catch the mocking nature till I read a few.

On a serious note... where would one find the REAL signals used.

Skunkability? I'm sure you have dozens of manuals.. perhaps videotapes and DVDs of them ;)

I realize that most of you have never been in combat, I have and trust me it's neither funny or pretty. I was a Naval Combat Aircrewman, Huey Door Gunner and SAR swimmer in Viet Nam. I took my training very, very seriously consequently I survived, of course luck had a lot to do with it also.
I have no time for anyone who thinks their training or training aides are funny. This chart of hand signals is a training aide and IMHO should not be taken lightly. Some foot soldier who sees this post may only remember the "funny" part that he saw on-line and not what the signal was meant to be.
Perhaps I should "lighten up", but I survived a war, gave my country 32 years of my life and lived to see my Grand Kids, because I did take my training seriously, very seriously.

chief,

I've got 8 years of Army service behind me, with tours of duty in Kosovo and Afghanistan as an Artillery Forward Observer with the 101st, and I think they're funny. Maybe not gut-busting, blow-soda-thru-my-nose-all-over-the-keyboard funny, but funny nonetheless.

Of course, nothing is truly funny if it doesn't offend someone.

Just my opinion,
Frank

bobs1066,

There is also the reverse of that one, with the right hand above the left, which means "Screw you, I'm covered."

Chief,

I don't see military when I look at those photos...I see cops. I've never seen our military equipped like that. I have seen our cops.

Looks like F Troop to me.

Good point, however same rules apply, take your training seriously so you can go home in one piece at the end of your watch.
By the way, check out the thread title, "MILITARY Hand Signals"

If the leg/grunt/foot soldier can’t tell the difference between the real deal and jest then he’s in the wrong M.O.S. to begin with.
Also the training N.C.O. should be able to see that.

Nor do I think some one would mistake OK I understand

I sent this list to a friend of mine.

He thought it was absolutely hysterical, and he spent 2 years in Vietnam as an F-4 driver, from 1967 to 1969. Well over 100 missions, Shot down once, and had at least one kill.

I guess it's all a matter of perspective.

ROTF LMAO I was crying it was so funny. I too didn't quite catch it till a couple into it. Thanks for the much needed cheer!!!!:neener:

Mike Irwin...

"Anyway, a deck operations guy said when he grabbed his left fist with his right hand (over top, like you're catching a punch) and then pulls them apart rapidly, it means "Get your head out of your a** or you're gonna get killed!""

You need to warn me when you are gonna post something like that, I almost spit coffee all over my monitor and keyboard! I need to show that to a Navy ex-flyer freind of mine.

Mike Irwin....

I have used the "Get Your Head Out Of Your A**" - signal several times on flight lines and up on the roof of various carriers.

Another favorite of mine.....

1. Stick your right arm straight out from you body with a clenched fist

2. Extend your thumb UP and your pinkie OUT (like you were holding a tea cup at a proper tea-party)

3. Move your thumb up and down several times.

This one is referred to as the "Give a sh*t" button", with a "hang it in your a** attachment.

Literal translation - "Do I look like I care? Quit bothering me!"

All bickering aside.
From the bottom of my heart.

Thank you for your service to our country for those 32 years.

I can not know what it was like for you in combat, but I am thankful that you survived and are here today.
And as part of that sacrifice we (all of us) can have this conversation today, because were a free country and are allowed to express our opinions freely.

God bless you.

And Thank you again,
RTFM

I thought it was hilarious...

And I'm coming up on my 20 years time in service, with some particularly scary moments, to include a North Korean MiG-29 off my left wing a few months ago.

Gotta remind myself, when I retire, to get all crabby and lose my sense of humor.

Which reminds me:

I realize that most of you have never been in combat, I have and trust me it's neither funny or pretty. I was a Naval Combat Aircrewman, Huey Door Gunner and SAR swimmer in Viet Nam. I took my training very, very seriously consequently I survived, of course luck had a lot to do with it also.

"Do you know what the difference between a Viet Nam veteran and a Gulf War veteran is? Of course you don't, man, because YOU WEREN'T THERE!"

As told me, after I came back from Riyadh, by my late grandfather, who bore the scars from his B-17 time in the 8th Air Force and a German flak shell. Even after that experience, he still maintained a sense of humor. Something MCPO Francis hadn't been issued when in the Navy, obviously...
