I was at a Galyans in Indianapolis recently and behind the counter was a stack of milsurp battle packs of .308!! At Galyans?? I asked the guy how much they were and he said they were about $40 - $45. Good price?? Not sure where they come from, I'll ask next time I'm in there.

On a side note. I've found Galyans to have the best price in town on WWB in .40 S&W 50rnd boxes. (when I can't find the value packs). This was a bit surprising since I had always heard about Galyans having much higher prices than most places.

Galyan's typical is higher than most places, because they carry better equipment. The $150 hiking boots are better quality than the $30 pair from Wal-mart or K-mart. On identical items, Galyan's is pretty competitive - not necessarily including firearms, but sometimes they surprise me.

I've found their WWB ammo is competitive w/ Wal-mart. Some calibers are a little higher, some area little cheaper. Galyans's also price matches.

Besides...

it's nice to talk to someone who wasn't working in a lawn and garden or houseware department yesterday

their prices on guns are usually pretty good to excellent

I lived in Indy years ago when the original dinky little store was in Plainfield. They were originally a "real" sporting goods store before the yuppies took over.

Except here in Orland Park ...

Our local Galyans is the only store in the entire chain that does not have a gun department.

Apparently they built the store based on the promise of the local officials that they would change a local ordinance prohibiting any sale of guns or ammunition within a mile of a school.

They built the store, roughted in an area for the guns and ammo and stocked it with everything else pending the change. Then in a city council referendum vote, reinforced the rule against gun sales within a mile of a school. The Galyans people are furious but are stuck with the store now and can't afford to move for a while.

Pretty stinky, but probably saving me thousands of dollars. A major sporting goods retailer a block from my office and no guns or ammo for sale.

The Local Galyans here has it marked Advanced International .308 caliber, 200 rounds for $39.99. The guy working at the time didn't know where they were from.

As far as prices on firearms they are generally lower than anyone locally and pretty competitive with online prices. Have to agree with 36fan on other stuff, expensive but seems like quality stuff. I mainly only shop the guns and ammo area.

I went into a Galyan's not long ago. The selection of hand guns was very limited, and the salesman wouldn't remove the two-pound lock from the one I wanted to look at.

I'll go to real gun shops from now on.

I found out from the guy behind the counter a couple of weeks ago that their inernal management won't let you look at firearms without showing your ID, and their insurance company requires that you have to ask them to remove the lock.

[old geezer voice] Back in the old days at the Plainfield store they used to place crates of ammo in the middle of the floor stacked as high as Apu's cans at the Kwik-E Mart. Of course, I remember the days of the bison cook-outs when the brothers returned from the Western Wastes.:uhoh:

We called nickels bees then too.:D

The last time I went into Galyan's the guy behind the firearms counter recognized me from the week before and remembered that I bought .40 the last time I was in. Impressive! Also their Pike Plaza Indianapolis store has a rather impressive inventory of guns. Lot more long guns than pistols. Very competitive prices to.

El T. I like that Plainfield store (bit of a drive but not bad). Bought my Beretta there.

Do you remeber back when part of Galyan's was a gardening store?

I recentlt picked up 2 battlepacks (200 rds ea) of .308 for 19.99 each from my local Galyans. i think that the country of origin is/was Portugal, good ammo regardless my DSA STG58 loves to eat it up.

A battlepack for $19.99 is an excellent price for Portuguese, $100 per case is better than almost any gunshow. Port is top-grade suplus ammo, of course previous storage condition can vary. I gotta go by as soon as I build up the ammo account; it's sadly depleted since wiping out the local Bass Pro Shop of Win .223 Q3131A a week ago (15 minutes after the store opened for their week long sale) :D

Orchard? I only remember orchards on the west side of P-field...

If you weren't so old, you might be able to remember where you left your spoon!
:D
