Mim?

I will give a simple way of explaning.

Cast parts molten metal is poured into a mold and cooled, and then barring voids, is used for production.

MIM parts are metal mixed with plastic, and then are injected into molds. Then they are heated and processed and filed to the proper shape.

The difference is a 1911 aficionado will say that all 1911 that have MIM parts in them are junk ect and proclaim all brands that use them as pot metal and other terms if the sort.

MIM is more like the old sintered gas filters chevy used - with the process altered to leave no voids, using higher strength materials, and less cost in heat.

You can also mix dissimilar materials together without separating the lower melting point out. Some exotic metal and composite alloys can only be made that way.

MIM.....?

Why would anyone lock a thread about stuff Made In Maine?

Unless it was from Mostly Inferior Metal....(wink)

There is no plastic in a MIM part.

In the first stage of production there is, it is then sintered out.

The process involves combining fine metal powders with a plastic binders which allow the metal to be injected into a mold using standard plastic injection molding machines. After the part is molded and before the binders are removed, the part is referred to as a 'green part'. The next step is to remove the binders with solvents and thermal processes. The resultant metal part is sintered at temperatures great enough to bind the particles but not melt the metal. The products of metal injection molding are up to 98% as dense as wrought iron and used in a broad range of applications (including medical, dental, firearms, aerospace, and automotive just to name a few.)

You know the funniest part of the MIM controversy (at least it's funny to me)?

These people argue incessantly about MIM parts in pistols. And, oh, do they argue.

Yet, commercial rifles and shotguns are full of parts made with metal injection molding and other powdered metal techniques, and nobody seems to argue about those. They shoot those long guns and crow about their wonderful qualities and everlasting longevity. That tells me that many of the people arguing (maybe most of them!) don't know what they're talking about.

ants,

I think that the issue with some guns are the changes that MIM heralded. Mostly the change from human hand fitters to CNC machines. Design engineering changes were happening to co-inside with MIM. This allowed drop in parts at the price of sloppier fit...

You want to know what I think is funny? People that think their trigger pulls are smoother when they don't realize that there is a accumulated increase of tolerances. Yep, looser feels smoother for a while, til your gun wears out and you find out that the bosses are not replaceable anymore. Then they tell you they have to replace the whole frame...

thank you for the replys, every little bit helps.FWIW I did do a search, but unlike someone said "search is not my friend" Mr. Computer is not my friend.we just barely get along. when all else fails I ask. jwr

Just as "search" can be your friend; FAQ can also help make Mr. computer your friend.

I don't understand why your question was challenged. Sometimes asking instead of Googling or FAQing is profitable to everyone.

jwr747 , understand that some people will be willing to answer your question while others can't take the time to do it , but CAN take the time to post telling you to look for yourself .

Fortunately , as you have seen , there ARE people that will try to help you out .

ptmmatssc....

I like your sig line. Being a fellow Mainer it is nice to see that fact pointed out once in awhile....

Well done, Sir...

Just looked at your site you listed. I'm about 40 mins away. I will be in touch....

gizamo , not my site , but is a friends of mine . I don't endorse much , but stand by him and his work .

"...people argue incessantly about MIM parts..." The same guys will argue that cast parts are no good either. All the while ignoring that their engine block is cast.
"...stuff Made In Maine..." Smells fishy to me. snicker.

Why would this thread be locked? It seems to have been helpful to a few of us, and being helpful to one person should be enough to keep it open.

And for those just saying ibtl, what is the point. I have done that in the past, but I realize now it is just an annoying way to get your post count up.

That's the exact reason that I checked this thread out. Now apparently I'm an idiot for trying to educate myself on the same topic.

If you google "MIM", you'll get a lot more on Maoist Internationalist Movement than you will anything gun-related. Some people who spend too much time on the internet "talking guns" probably won't realize this as a possibility.
