I have always wanted a Mini-14, despite what I've read about accuracy. Anyway, I picked up a used one yesterday at a fairly decent price. It shoots good and ejects fine. However, I am surprised at how far it ejects the spent casings. I reload and have only been able to find about half of the shells ejected so far. It ejects them as far as 20 yards. It's hard following the path because they eject so fast. I couldn't tell where they were ejecting so my son stood behind me and followed the trajectory. Several shot over a hill behind me. They also seem to get damaged on the way out, as several of them had sharp dings right on the neck. Is this normal and if not, can it be remedied?

Normal. The factory gas port is huge, to promote good cycling, so they kinda fling the brass all over. I stand next to the far right berm, and can usually collect all of them...or most of them.

Take a look at the Mini 14 Club thread. My Accuracy Systems adjustable gas block enabled me to start shooting from the RIGHT end of the firing line. Group sizes shrank too. I only lose one case in twenty, if that.:D

You can get an adjustable gas block or different size of gas port tube. The adjustable block would be, in my opinion, the best way to go.

Wow, that's a lot of mods/gadgets available for the Mini-14! I thought I read someone here complaining there were no aftermarket toys available...
Now, what is the ONE thing that would most increase accuracy under $100? I have very little money to spend, and don't want overpriced gadgets that do nothing but look tacticool- too old for mall ninja stuff.

I pulled the trigger group apart on mine and polished up the contact surfaces using 800 emery and honing oil over a piece of glass. I didn't change any of the angles. The trigger weight is the same but it is smooth and breaks clean. It made a considerable difference compared to the jerky pull it had out of the box. Using 50 gr American Eagle JHPs also produced some improvement. Lube is Tetra grease.
FWIW
YMMV
