I need to remove the flash suppressor from my stainless Mini-14 GB model in order to bring it into california legally. I'm assuming that the factory unit threads onto the barrel. Does anybody know what size thread they are? I'd like to find a good quality muzzle brake to replace it with. It seems that a muzzle brake is considered legal, but a flash hider is not. Right now, the rifle is stored out of state. If I can figure out the thread pitch, I can order something that will work to replace it with; and therefor be able to bring it back into the state legally. Anybody got a suggestion?

Thanks,

Hank

I would assume it would have to be a standard AR15/M16 1/2" x 28 TPI thread.

That is the universal size for .223 muzzle attachments in the United States & elsewhere.

Can't swear to it though.

I think that the 1980's DTA MilBrake (sp?) for the Mini 14 was theaded 9/16" x 24 tpi.

Make sure the brake is permanently installed, CA prohibits threaded barrels and having a brake that can be removed won't help your situation.

Thanks for the replies.

It does appear to be threaded with a 9/16x24tpi pitch. I'm finding it hard to locate a .223 muzzle brake in this configuration. As far as the laws in CA are concerned, the threaded barrel or a muzzle brake are fine; it's the flash hider that is not allowed for some stupid reason.

Ca. Muzzle Brake

Hi,
If you are interested- I have a mil/ brake in stainless that is currently mounted on my Mini 14 GB. It is threaded, and has a set screw. I would be interested in an even swap.

I already called Ruger and was about to send my GB back to get a factory FH installed and this would save me some time and bux.

Let me know what you think.

I'm not interested in getting rid of my factory flash hider. I just need to remove it to be legal in California. Unless I find a muzzle brake that really works good, I'll be reinstalling the factory part again when I leave the state.

I don't know if it matters, but I've always had better accuracy with this rifle than my Ranch model. I've read that the added weight out at the muzzle might make the difference. I guess that for right now, I'm looking to find a brake that will screw on without modification to the rifle. I'd like one in stainless with a design that actually does something. If anyone has one that they are no longer using and would be interested in selling, let me know what you have.

Thanks,

Hank
