Does anyone else have a firearm checklist? By this, I mean what kind of guns would you never find yourself without? After about six minutes of thought, I think my minimum on hands would be as follows:

22lr Semi Auto Handgun or Revolver
9mm Luger/Para Semi Auto Handgun - High Capacity
38sp/357mag Revolver
45acp Semi Auto Handgun - Single Stack

22lr Bolt Action or Semi Auto Rifle - Up to 4x Scope
270win/308win/30.06 etc Bolt Action Rifle - At Least Up to 7x Scope
223rem/7.62x39/7.62x51 etc Semi Auto Battle Rifle

More is obviously better and variety is the spice of life, but I think this list actualized with quality firearms is the minimum I would ever have in my safe.

What about you?

Minimums

Let's see, these were my categories when filling out the armory:

1.) Plinkers, small game, .22 rifle and handgun (Buckmark, Remington 552)
2.) Medium frame 9mm (Sig P228)
3.) "Big" revolver (S&W 686 counts at the smallest big revolver IMO)
4.) Concealable handgun (S&W 642, although this category is partially duplicated by #2
5.) Handy home defense carbine - Marlin 1894 in .357 for me.
6.) Hunting rifles with dual purposes, even if you don't hunt - nice to have if the day ever came - 30-30 Marlin, scoped Win 70 in 30-06
7.) A 12 guage shotgun

Once those categories were filled out, I started a milsurp category.:neener:

Service size handgun, preferably a .45 but 9mm or lager is fine.
Compact handgun for carry, 9mm or larger
Rifle .223 or larger
Shotgun 20ga or larger

later, rinse, repeat....until you need a bigger safe, then repeat again :)

1 firearm of any sort to qualify as a " gunperson " as long as the intent and desire to own more is there.

You need
1. Rimfire 22lr pistol, preferably semi-auto
2. Rimfire 22lr rifle preferably semi-auto
3. A good self defence pistol, I prefer .45 1911s
4. 1 each, at the very least a dependable battle type rifle, I prefer .30 cal
5. Shotgun, I have a Remington 870 12 gauge.
1000 rounds for every caliber you have with the exception of the shotgun. 250 to 300 rounds of 00 buck if you reload.

One is the minimum. Could even be an air gun. If you don't have any you are not serious about it. Kind of like being a race car driver without a car.

The minimum for me? A rifle, shotgun, pistol and air gun. You did not say what you want them for though... If it is just to have them than that is enough for me...

Minimum Number of Guns a Gunperson Should Have
Well, there are needs and there are wants.

To be a Gunperson (firearm person) you NEED a minimum of one firearm.
Does anyone else have a firearm checklist?
This is my WANTS check list:
1. 12 gage pump shot gun w/ 3 barrels (got it.)
2. Homland Defense/SHTF fantasy scenario rifle, for me a Saiga in .223 w/ a 21” barrel.
3. Marlin 1884c in .357 mag./.38 special, fun plinker that can back up number 2.
4. Double barrel 12 gage coach/lupara range toy (may a back up for number 1 in a pinch.)
5. .357 revolver to go with number 3 (not that I can hit anything with a pistol, but this is a list of wants.)
6. FN FS 2000 (again, a list of wants.)
7. A Neostad (after I win the lottery, and can buy the patents.)

It all depends on your bank account balance and the maximum limit on your credit cards!!! :D

I'm inclined to say, however many you feel like. Not everyone likes revolvers or hunting rifles, just as not everyone likes poly pistols or ARs.

That being said, I think DoubleTapDrew is on the right track. A full size handgun, and compact handgun, a rifle and a shotgun, are what a gun enthusiast should own at a minimum.

I personally am going to limit my collection to 9 , at least for a while.

Guns I have:
1) semi-auto .22 - Walther P22
2) full size .45 - Ruger P345
3) compact pistol - Taurus Mil Pro PT140

Don't have yet:
4) full size 9mm - Sig P226/229
5) snubbie revolver - not sure yet
6) AR-15 - Bushmaster Patrolman
7) shotgun - Remington 870
8) .22 rifle - Ruger 10/22
9) Bolt action scoped rifle - Remington 700/"M24"

I think those 9 guns should provide more than enough fun/practice/preparedness for me. I don't have the $$ just to collect for the sake of collecting. And I have absolutely zero interest in anything antique or old milsurplus.

OK. OK. Gunperson sounds a little PC, I admit it. You can have only one and be a gunperson.

I also forgot to add a 12 guage Pump or Semi Auto Shotgun.

Anyone who is a GUNNY person should have the triad of calibers in any weapon of their choice and thats for pistol...then the triad for rifles.

.22LR
.38special
.45acp

.223
.308
7.62 x 39

Add a 12 gauge pump in there somewhere.

If it goes bang when you pull the trigger and sends a projectile downrange, and you practice with it to improve your proficiency, you're in.

Minimum? I'd think one, provided you're of age. I'll make exceptions for those younguns who don't have one of their own yet.

As for filling out categories, that depends on what categories a person deems applicable to himself/herself. Not everybody needs or wants a hunting rifle. Not everybody needs or wants a rifle for antipersonnel duties.

A variaty of guns =

(1) Standard 12 ga pump shotgun = Remington 870 Express - nothing fancy :)

(2) Standard revolver = Smith & Wesson 686-1 in .357 - one of the best shooting revolvers out there = (JOMHO) :D

(3) Standard 22 rifle = RUGER 10/22 carbine type rifle. Get some after market hi-cap mags, you can lay down some cover fire using those CCI Stingers, I ain't sticking my head out!!! :fire:

After that, you start adding to your collection w/ some good old milsurp stuff - Mosen-Nagants, K31 Swiss, M98 Mauser's SKS's, AK's CEMT, and stuff like that, it will cause you to go broke, and get divorced. ( I am still not quite broke, and she hasn't mentioned DIVORCE in six months.) :cuss:

For me, it's dependent upon what you like & what you're collecting. I know guys that have a little bit of everything in every caliber so they don't count. I know a few guys that can't get enough long guns or hand guns, so they don't really count either.
Me, I have found my needs met w/ a 22lr semi auto & wheelgun, a couple 38/357magnum wheelguns, 9mm semis & a few 45 acps. In long guns, I've gone 308 & 223 and a coule 12 ga shottys :D

A number equal to your age, as long as you are Methuselah.:)

Right now I have only 4, but 2 on lay away and one parts kit. not to mention misc airguns and a starter pistol.

I think if you are a gun person you generally cannot have enough.

It depends on your situation and what you do. For me at this moment in life I have all I need (actually more, truth be known). I have more than the minimum I consider "necessary" but no where near what I'd like to have. So for me the minimum would be a concealable carry gun, a full size "battle" handgun, a .22 rifle and a .12 gauge shotgun. Next addition would be a medium or high power rifle.

This is very childish... imagine! Counting how many guns you have, or should have. Silly people... (by the way, I have a Ruger Single six convertible, Colt Army & Navy double action 41LC, Winchester 1400... yeah, I know. bought it in 1967, 22 semi auto rifle of some make, (2) .50 cal Hawken replicas, 1911 Colt, CZ75B, and my old Fanner 50.)
BUT! We should discuss the important stuff... how many Cars you have... I mean, that is the true measure of a man's huevos, wouldn't you say? 1915 Hupmobile, 1925 REO Speedwagon pickup, 1926 Buick Master, 1929 Lasalle Club Sedan, 1931 Hupmobile Model S (2), 1930 Chevrolet Landau, 1932 Chevrolet Deluxe, 1934 REO Flying Cloud, 1935 Ford rumble seat coupe, 1948 REO Speedwagon Dumptruck, 1950 Chevrolet 5 window truck, 1950 GMC 5 window truck, and a 1955 MG Magnette. The fact that none but the Buick are currently running should not enter into the picture...
By the way... I found the 41 Colt in the '34 REO... no kidding.

Fortunately, I always keep my feathers numbered -Foghorn Leghorn

Kind of equates to "what is the minimum amount of freedom a person should have?" The minimum ( and the maximum) number of guns a gunperson should have is the amount they choose to. Not what the state, the feds, or some politico says.
