Ohioans for Concealed Carry has learned that the Kroger Co. has posted signs banning concealed firearms in its Cincinnati and Dayton area stores. Kroger is one of the largest grocery store chains in the country, with 2003 sales of $53.8 billion. Kroger operates 3334 grocery and convenience stores in at least 32 states under the Kroger, Ralphs, King Soopers, City Market, Dillons, Smith’s, fry’s, QFC, Kessel, Cala Foods/Bell Markets, Owen’s, JayC, Hilander, Gerbes, Payless, Food4Less, Foods Co., Fred Meyer, Turkey Hill, Kwik Shop, Loaf ‘N Jug, Quik Stop, and Tom Thumb brand names. Kroger also operates 440 jewelry stores under the Fred Meyer, Littman, Barclay, and Fox's brand names.

Kroger has not previously banned concealed firearms in their stores in other states where concealed carry is legal, but this sets a dangerous precedent.

Please take the time to assist your brothers and sisters in Ohio. Call Kroger’s national customer service number at 800-576-4377 and ask them why they are discriminating against concealed carry licensees in Ohio. Let them know that you will not shop at any Kroger-owned grocery, convenience, or jewelry stores until the discrimination ends.

It has been brought to my attention that your Kroger stores in the southern Ohio area has banned leagly licensed carry firearms from being possessed on the premisses. Because of this action, I will not be shopping in any of your stores nation wide. I am quite sure that illegally possessed gun owners will not adhere to this policy.

If this is the case then it is outrageous. Seems like we need to launch an effective campaign .... ''a la Applebees'' ... remember that one!?

Guess they think cos they are so big they can stomp over people's rights regardless. Keep info coming back ..... and give us an email address if possible. This needs ''attention''.

I would be happy to inform them that even as a one-man-band . I can and will do everything possible to ''spread the word'' .... and make sure I erode their customer base to the max. Even if small scale.

My letter to Kroger, posted via their website...http://www.kroger.com/customercomments.htm

I have recently become aware that Krogers has elected to post "no concealed carry" signs in their southern Ohio stores. As long as this policy (which is appearently unique to Ohio, and is not in place in other states, 44 of which also allow concealed carry) is in place I will NOT spend a dime in your stores. I have been a regular customer for years and know many of my local store's employees by name, but CUB Foods will have my business until this policy is reversed. Criminals, who carry guns illegally without undergoing a background check or attending training classes will continue to carry anyway, so the only person you affect is the law-abiding citizen. It's time to wake up and reconsider this decision.

You'll be hearing from hundreds of gun owners and concealed carry license holders across the country on this issue and we WILL take our money elsewhere. Feel free to visit the online forum http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=79833 to see the beginnings of this outrage.

If there is a competitive industry out there, it is the grocery business. A number of states have a local opt out provison. In my state all they gotta do is just post. When I see that I send an email to marketing (preferred) or customer Service (backup plan).

I've seen situations where corporate was beseiged by anti-gun activists and the responsible party caved just because of the one-sided presentation and pressure. When exposed to counter facts the ban was lifted. Two such companies in the south where they reversed corporate policy was Home Depot and Lowes. In both cases the anti's were busy promoting their positions. After gun boards got through their attitudes and policies changed.

Be professional, factual, firm and lucid.

For now, I have voiced my thoughts via their comments page on the website .....
Sirs,

If my information is correct, then I am led to believe that you plan to prohibit the lawful carry of concealed firearms in your Ohio stores.

I am thus far at a loss to understand your agenda, seeing as we all know that any action of this type affects only the law abiding. The criminal will still continue to carry if he so wishes.

Ohio has waited long for its right to carry, too long. Is this now some sort of ''rights deprivation'' mission on which you plan to embark? Making yourselves appear as corporative legislators for the people.?

If this plan is implemented and I have confirmation of same, be assured, I will do my very best in my own small way to see that you not only lose my custom in ANY of your stores, but that I shall make it my mission to influence all others with whom I am in contact, to follow a similar course.

They say freedom comes at a price. Well, it could be that the price in this case if you intend to implement this, will be a significant loss of revenue to yourselves. You may decide this is too small to be concerned about but public indignation has been known to grow and flourish when rights are trampled upon.

I hope you will give this matter serious and logical consideration, and in fact would be keen to know just what you might hope to achieve by this move. It is certainly not something that is going to make people ''safer''. Perhaps quite the opposite.

I am, sincerely

Yours

Get some people together and stand at the driveway into the store and hold up large signs that state that the people who shop there are not safe because criminals will be carrying firearms in the store. Be creative.

Kroger is a HORRIBLE company to work for i know that much! They treat their employees like garbage.

hmmmm Kroger is FAR from the worst employer i have ever had in my short years. And i have worked for all three major grocery retailors in the Seattle area (Safeway, Albertsons, Kroger (QFC)). In fact i would say that Kroger is the better of the three.

Is this actually confirmed - did someone check with Kroger's to see if it is true?

E-mail sent.

It is my understanding that some of your Ohio stores are posting signs debarring the lawful carry of firearms. I may not live in Ohio, but I have shopped at Ralph's in CA for many years. As long as any of your stores continue this policy, I will gladly switch to Von's and Stater's. In addition, I will pass the information about your Ohio policies on to the hundreds of fellow gunowners in my circles of influence. Please reconcider your stand on this issue.

sendec,
Free kill zones are sprouting up everywhere in N.E. Ohio.
Damn near every bulilding and business I see has a "No Firearms" sign posted. :barf:
It's mass hysteria.

I'm afraid it will take an incident like the Texas Luby's before these idiots understand that criminals don't pay attention to laws, let alone some stupid sign.

I have already had several discussions with my employers HR** person, about the posted 'No Firearms' signs.

Asked if she was willing to put up the "Gun free home---Please don't hurt us" sign on her front door. After 10 seconds of stone cold silence "Excuse me. I have a meeting." Sulked in her closed-door office the rest of the day.

**HR does not mean Human Resources. In this case Human RatFink.

Hal, some of those idiots (Toby Hoover & Lori O'Neil come immediately to mind) are so far back in the deep dark woods that even an Ohio Luby's style Massacre wouldn't get the point through to them. Thyere would just be screaming that it was the fault of the Ohio CCW'rs.

The day that the CCW law took effect, Ms. Hoover was waving around a plastic mock-up of the AR-15/M-16 style rifles, claiming that was what the CCW folks would be carrying. (Don't have a link, but can probably be found on the Ohioccw.org site news archives)

No Kroger store near me, but I'm going to let them know what I think of them

I have confirmed this. Went to Krogers for a quick run this morning as they are the closest grocery store, and because I wanted to see if the signs were there. They are.

Spoke with the General Manager, told him I was a longstanding customer, know the cashiers by name (without peeking) and told him I wouldn't be back to ANY Krogers store until the signs came down. Had a nice calm discussion. He said the decision was made at the corporate level and there was nothing he could do to remove the signs without corporate direction. He was a very nice guy, listened intently to what I had to say, seemed to understand and said he would pass the feedback on to his zone manager. I explained that folks who have undergone training and background checks are not a risk to the safety and security of his store (quite to the contrary). The decision was explained to him as being related to the amount of cash that flows through each store on a daily basis and a security issue. He was SHOCKED to find out that Krogers doesn't ban legal concealed carry in any other state, just Ohio.

Keep the pressure on, this policy needs to be changed.

Mark
