Mission to reduce recoil

There are two great options for recoil reduction in shotguns.
According to their website, the Blackhawk Knoxx® SpecOps Gen III™ Stock with Recoil Suppression Technology effectively reduces felt recoil by up to 80%, taking the original SpecOps Stock to an even higher level of effectiveness, performance and reliability. I have a Gen II, it really does reduce recoil, it fit my Maverick.

There is another new system, the NO KICK Hydraulic Recoil Stock Kit for Moss 500/590 Shotgun - w/ Magpul CTR Stock. With its Hydraulic Stock Tube it supppsedlu reduces felt-recoil by up to 80%.

Those options don’t look like they would work well on a waterfowl shotgun. If the OP wants to go that route a Gracoil, Bump Buster or Isis would work better.

The ONLY thing that reduces FELT recoil is gun FIT. The ONLY thing that reduces ACTUAL recoil is heaver gun combined with smaller payload and lower velocity.

Thanks for the information, I’m not really a hunter so I don’t know what might be the best for that type of shooting. Unfortunately, I do know that Ken Rucker has retired and is no longer making the Bump Buster.

I would check with regs before I replaced the mag dowel. Here you must have an official marked dowel. IE, the one that came with the gun or an official replacement.

Felt recoil is also helped by Sims Limsaver recoil pads or Past shoulder pads. The gel inside of each disperses the recoil over a longer duration than a harder pad or buttplate. It's in milliseconds but you can feel the difference.

I’ve used heavy plastic bags with lead shot in the butt, and a piece of 5”long 3/8pipe “nipple” filled with melted lead in magazine tube of a Remington M870.
My Savage M110 in .300 RemUltMag has a matrix of “great stuff” holding 8oz of birdshot in butt. 4oz of lead under barrel in stock forend to balance it. Keeps scope from furrowing my forehead shootin in field positions.

I’m soon to be 65. 10yrs since I’ve goose hunted. I now hunt ducks and turkey with a TriStar Raptor 20ga Max4 camo. I’m Still using some #2 Tungsten Heavy Shot I used in N. Dakota 14yrs ago...
Opening weekend, we could have killed ‘em with a tennis racquet. One shooter used a Browning Citori .410 with Bismuth #4’s. Shot limits!

I ordered a past recoil pad and a beartooth comb kit. Might try those and then see if I need to add some lead to the gun to weight it down. If the market ever calms down I may see if I can pick up an SA-08 in 12 gauge as I think highly of the 20 gauge I have.

I have the Beartooth Comb Raising Kit on a Marlin 336 and my turkey shotgun. They don’t work for me on wing shooting shotguns because they really affect cast. I have an Isis Comb Raiser on one of my shotguns instead. Hopefully you won’t have an issue.

Where is here? The reason I ask is because I’ve never heard of this requirement in the US. Also magazine plugs for the Mossberg 500 and Maverick 88 are as crude as you can get. I can make one that is indistinguishable from an OEM plug.

Yeah, I sort of had to chuckle at that one. The chintzy length of dowel that is the plug in my Maverick is starting to disintegrate, so I might have to get another length of dowel from the hardware store.

I have been waterfowl hunting with a Maverick 88 in 12 gauge. I have managed OK, but with a bunch of goose hunting of late, I am getting tired of being beat up with 3" goose loads. A significant part of the problem is the very light weight of the gun (plastic fantastic, decontented mossy 500 rip off). Some is due to the action, and some is due to the fit. The rest is my occasional failure to shoulder it correctly.

Obviously this isn't the most opportune time to think about an alternative, but pretend that we aren't in a run on everything for a moment. What would you choose as a 12 gauge 3" waterfowling gun that will help reduce the beatings? I am dragging it through all conditions, so I would prefer not to part with a truly stupendous amount of money.
I had one and did 2 things.Use shorty shells(with the gizmo that inserts to make these work) and bought one of these. ATI pistol grip stock. img-SPG0100.gif

The stated use of the shotgun is goose hunting. Several people have recommended stocks that are ARish looking and have pistol grips. These type of stocks aren’t for wingshooting and in fact make it harder to hit flying birds.
