Snake

I picked up this K38 Target Masterpiece 14-3 today for five benjamins, very smooth trigger and tight action. Was this a good deal ??

Nice looking old Masterpiece. Zero holster wear on it. $500.00 to me would be a good, fair price to pay for an excellent looking old classic.
You did good.

I agree; a decent (and fair), price on a well preserved classic S&W target revolver!

You did well, you didn't quite steal it, but you did very well, no worries.

Great revolvers, mine was my first S&W revolver so long ago, and it is still as good today as it was back then.

Yes, I think you did very well.

That is what I paid for this Model 14-3 a few years ago. I was tickled pink when the dealer accepted my offer of $500 instead of the $550 it was marked at. This one left the factory in February of 1974. This was one of those deals where after the deal was struck the dealer said "I think I have the box out back".

As you can see, mine is wearing Magna grips. Yours is wearing what were called in those days Oversized Target grips.

Do your grips look like walnut, or like the Goncalo alves the grips on my Model 19-3 were made from?

a very good deal, just wait till you get to shoot it, my revolver(made in 1950) came thru a gun show buy from a dealer who got several revolvers from a estate and didn,t even check for the real value as he had it priced like yours.

Nah, a young, tough looking fellow such as yourself ought by rights to have a three five seven instead. You and me, we could work out a deal. Except that I suspect you have more than a inkling of what you have in your hands.

I love the m14. You picked that up at a price a good bit less than what they go for around here.

I have a 14-3 and a 14-6. When I shoot with Mrs Thunkit, she gets the -3. She prefers the lighter weight of the half lug. So do I.
The -6 has the full lug.

I have plenty of .357s but no exclusive .38 special so this fills the bill but I might look for a model 15 :)

From what I can tell they look just like all of the other Goncalo Alves target grips I have , I like em.

In all seriousness, you're going to love the 14-3. The actions from that era tend to the magical. With no other type of gun than an earlier double action does the dictum keep your finger off the trigger until you're ready to shoot have so much portent. With a well-tuned single action or a 1911, I feel like I am in control of my impulses. With an early Smith or Colt double action, something emanates from the action whenever I pick one up that just says, "stroke me, stroke me. It'll feel good. You'll like it." A strict scientific view reinforces the concept that the gun is inanimate metal, but with the right Smith in my hand, I'm not so sure as I ought to be.

I have plenty of .357s but no exclusive .38 special so this fills the bill but I might look for a model 15 :)

this older S&W model 10 built into a race gun, still will stack 148gr HBWC,s into one hole at 20 yards if you are steady enough.

Op - very nice acquisition , very good price.
You mentioned the model 15... go out and find one - I guarantee that you will not regret it.
( btw , prices on 15s are on the rise ; no sense in delay.)

That is a ridiculous deal.

I got a K22 from the early 1950's for a $440 bid, plus shipping and FFL. So basically I paid the same price that you did. Mine has bad finish and incorrect grips. It also has the best trigger of any revolver that I've ever shot, and is way more accurate than I am (or any of my friends who have shot it). I have two different friends who regularly pester me to sell it to them.

Yours is gorgeous. The deal that you got was insane.

5D0C4159-D0F1-401C-B27A-FF5AC78F9F01.jpeg You were very luck to find one of the best target guns out there for a great price. Mine started out as a 6” but some idiot Decided to drill and tap the barrel for a scope and ground off the front sight! I bought it for a song and found an 8 3/8” barrel. After a little machine work and proper fitting with a .004 Gap, I have a gun way more accurate than I am. Mine and every Model 14 I’ve owned loves 148gr HBWC with 2.8-3 gr of Bullseye. This 10 shot group was fired at 25 yards off a rest. I can’t do it every day but I get lucky here and there. No doubt in my mind yours will do this too. Enjoy!
