I am at a crossroads and trying to decide. I currently have a 642 and a 4" model 13. I am thinking of adding another revolver to my carry rotation. I like shoot the 13 better than any other gun I own. I shoot the 642 quite well. I am looking at the 60 because I feel the added weight will help me even more. I am thinking the 19 because being a snub I could carry it appendix and I know I would shoot it close to the 13. One being 38 and be 38/357 isnt a big deal. I am perfectly happy with 5/6 38 special before reload. I like the SA option on both of these. While I would probably not use it for self defense it has its place with small animals etc. What are your thoughts? I carry a Glock 26 most days now if that gives an idea of weight I am used to.

The 66 and 65 would be on par with the 19, but since you have the 19 located...

I have a 2.5" model 66 (a stainless 19) and I love it. I've only shot one model 60 and I remember liking it better than the 642 I was shooting. They are both fine revolvers The 60 is smaller and easier for concealed carry, but I think I'd prefer the 19 myself for general shooting. You can't go wrong with a Smith revolver in my opinion.

camsdaddy, either one would be an excellent choice for your needs. If I had to make that decision, I would opt for the M-19 2 1/2", the reasons are, the option to shoot either 38 special or .357 Magnum ammo, the K frame holds 6 rounds Vs. the J frame's 5 rounds, for myself and most shooters the K frame is easier to shoot well.
The M-60 is an excellent little revolver, I've had one since 1974, but IMHP any J frame is best used as a back up weapon or for a last minuet run to the C store.

I've owned 3 M60, (also a couple of M36 and a M49) before settling on the M642 for ankle carry.

I've owned 3 M19 (plus a couple of M13) and a couple of M66s also.

The only advantage that the steel J-frame has is slightly smaller cylinder size than the K-frame. Being heavier than the M642, defeats most of it's size and weight advantage.

The K-frame has a 20% higher round capacity, is easier to load with speedloaders (more cylinder catch clearance), and has a better feeling trigger (better leverage and longer hammer travel) along with the more tunable leaf spring powered action.

I'm not even considering the chambering...my 2.5" M66 spends most of it's time loaded with .38 spl +P ammo

If the weight difference is not a factor, I would go with the model 19. The 19 has a much nicer trigger and will be more accurate.

My 2 favorite S&W revolvers are the 19 and the 66. I bought a 19 in 1982 and just sold it 5 years ago. I now own a 66 as I prefer stainless.

But S&W makes no other gun that fits my hand as well as the two above. They both point flawlessly to what I want to shoot and fit my hand perfectly.

My guess is once you handle a K frame you'll feel the same. I owned a model 36 and just don't like J frames though they are small.

I carry a Model 19 2 1/2" daily. On some occasions when sartorial splendor demands something more sleek, ;) I carry a Model 640-1.

I'm a firm believer in the mdl 19.

I'm a big fan of both frames. Low speed, high drag guy that I am, an old 36-1 J seems to be my go-to piece. That said, if I were you, already in possession of full-size K, and lightweight J, I'd split the difference and look for a 2" model 12 in great shape.

The 12 is the airweight version of the 10 snubby: it shoots like any K (covered perfectly, above, by 9mmepiphany), and carries about as well as a steel J (in fact, my 12 weighs 1oz less than my 3" J).

Based on what I'm seeing in your OP, I bet you'd like the 12 K snub. I'm pretty fond of mine.

I prefer the K frame over the J as well, hence I'd take the 19. Heck, I want a nice 4" one if I could find one to trade for.

The 19 isn't going to be easy to walk around with on your hip all day long, I know, I carry a snub model 66 every day. And the model 60's aren't all that much lighter, unless it an alluminum framed 60.

I much prefer the Model 19 as a shooter but Model 60 would be easier to carry, especially appendix. Adjustable sights don't seem very friendly for appendix carry.

The Model 60 also gives you something a little heavier to practice your snubby skills. I've got a similar set-up with a Ruger SP101 and an LCR.

So, lot's of shooting and occasional carry--Model 19. day-to-day carry: Model 60.

IMO the only advantage to carrying a J frame is it's light in it's Airweight form. If you take away it being light by choosing a M60 I see no reason not to carry a snub-nose K frame instead. That along with the fact the M19 is probably the best fighting revolver ever made I would choose the M19 over the M60 every time.

Good for you David! I hope you really enjoy it!

Cheers!

Given the choice between the Model 19 and the Model 60, I would go with the Model 19 with a 2.5" barrel. You already have one the best J frame snubbies out there with your Model 642, and since you shoot the best with your Model 13, a Model 19 snubbie would make for a great transitional choice between the two of them.

A K frame does everything better than a j frame with the exception of concealment.

If that is not an issue, the choice is clear.

Between the two options, the 60 has too much overlap with your 642 to justify it over the 19, which would be an interesting new(ish) flavor.

Get the 19.
