Modern 98 mauser build?

About 15 years ago I did exactly what you originally posted. Using an inheritance rifle, a commercial FN mauser action from the 50s my local gunsmith went to work on a heavy bbl long range setup for me.
Douglas air gauge premium 26" .308 set up in a McMillan A3. Squared up the action and put a Kreighoff set single trigger on it, which in retrospect wasnt really nessasary. I cant recall the manufacturer of the bases but rather than put a 20 minute base on I asked for a 10 which worked out very well. Set up with a Leupold Mark 4 this setup has worked great for me, second bbl still going strong. I would dang sure do it again.

When I do my 280ai I'll probably use a fn, try to find a earlier one that has the c cut. My 09 has a air gauge Douglas and will shoot 1/4 moa. I'd like to build a heavier target/bench gun but just don't have a range to make use of it.

In an earlier post on on this thread (#11) I made reference to the "crested" receiver ring modification to '98 actions. Crested is only a word I invented to describe the resulting appearance as it looks somewhat like a crest on top of the ring after side areas have been cut away to achieve a slick profile. I'm sure gunsmiths who can do the work must have more professional names for it, and my invented may have caused some confusion and misunderstanding. So to make my meaning more understanding here is a series of pics that may better illustrate the effect. Also notice this action is shorter than normal length, as it has been shortened a full inch. Which is another worthwhile modification for the '98, making it just right for the cute little .250 Savage.or similar calibers. 21A_2991.JPG 21A_2995 (2).JPG 21A_3011 (2).JPG 21A_3010.JPG 21A_3018 (2).JPG

Seen a ruger no1 220swift today for $650 at one lgs and the other still has that ruger 458wm 77 ts think that's for $850 so there's some things tempting me and trying to do this mauser build lol.

It's a nice touch, what bases do you use.

Beautiful wood and metalwork on both rifles -- the welding on the shortened rails is invisible, and that safety mod has been particularly well-executed! When you pay for this level of craftsmanship you are entitled to call it whatever you want.

Now you've made me curious about the donor actions -- may I ask what each of these started life as? Also I see that the shortened action has only three base holes -- is this for a one-piece base?

Ideally, the crest will match the width of the scope base so they will flow together and look like they were custom made for each other. Which in some cases they actually are, as shown in one of the attached examples. The one piece base on other example was shortened to match the shortened action. Which I may soon change as one of my current projects is replacing the one piece bases on some of my rifles with classier Buehler two piece bases. They are no longer made so I buy them whenever I can. 21A_2963.JPG 21A_2640.JPG .

I’m reading this with great interest. I have a WWII K98k in original form and was talking about it with a retired ex-gunsmith friend. He immediately offers me a choice of three Mauser actions to pick from. The first is an Argentine 1891 in original form. Argentine Mauser.jpg Not for me but may be fun to assemble together with a new military stock someday.

The second is this one

Mauser Action.jpg I think it is a 1896 Spanish Mauser. I selected what appears to be a Yugoslav 98 action that has been drilled for a scope and the extractor jeweled. IMG_0470.JPG

I’m trying to figure out what to do. I think I’ll do a .30-06 light barreled hunting rifle but want a modern looking stock. He’s giving me a walnut stock blank that could be sent in to a stock maker. Does Boyd’s or other stock makers accept stock blanks instead of using their own? This blank was made from a Chicago hotel lobby column. I intend to give them a call but looking for other providers as well.

You can send the wood to Richards micro fits and they will inlet it, I believe boyds would years ago but there not the company they used to be. Maybe worth a call but boyds stocks just have no sole for some reason.
The days of stripping down I original rifle are over, prefer one that can't be restored or even one that may not be 100% original but will make a good shooter.

The 3006 length rounds can be tight in the yugos but if you load to sammi they will do.

The 1891 are a nice rifle, some were in poor condition when they came in others very nice, I did one 5-6 years ago. I did some work on a buddy's 318 dodge and he gave me a cut down sporter 91. I had a nice barrel that j.p. Sauer and sohn made, think it was off a 88 or another small ring sporter before 1905-1907 or so. Fit the barrel in the barn on a -15° day one winter, frozen my but off lol. It still needs work tho, I aged the wood to look old but stripped and may do some engraving on the action some day.

For the 98 build I put $600 to the side I just need to find a action, depending on what I find will determine what I build. A 09 Argentine and I'll make a 9.6x62 to go with they 7x57ackley I have. If I find a nice commercial fn then probably do a 280ai.

Tell me more, Troy...

Long branch mk4 mk 1* 1943 looks mostly matching, not sure on the safety and has a mk3 read sight I believe. Great stock nice figure, and few small dents. 5 grove left twist barrel. Shoots great.

the sxs is a new baker, model 1896 12ga rebounding hammers, the right side hammer was replaced with I believe a 1897 model, very hard to tell tho. 30" barrels I believe. Gluing has been worn but not bad, color on the twist barrels are not bad and no inclusions in the twist.gun looks up nice and tight, will cut paper and no raddle with the forend off. Small repair on the for of the butt plate. Barrels ring the hole lentgh.

round pistol grip stock, checkkering is there, flat top so not to grippy. Has a old repair were the butt stock meets the action on both sides, looks stable with no new cracks starting

We may need to talk when you get ready to part with them. I may be interested.
