Not by gun, that's illegal in NY, by car.

A moose wandered onto I-684 near Goldens Bridge in Westchester Co., about 40 miles outside on NYC a few evenings ago.

It was promptly struck by several cars, eventually involving and damaging 9 vehicles.

The body was torn to pieces, and the responding fire chief, a hunter, thought there was too much blood on the highway for a deer. He then found a leg, and a foot, and decided it wasn't a deer. The Dept. of Envir. Cons. requested they save the head for testing, it's now sitting in the FD fridge. They think it wandered down from Vermont, although NYS now has about 500 moose, but no open season.

It sort of reminded me of that Woody Allan stand up routine, where he shoots a moose but it's only grazed in the head and comes awake on his hood, which in NYC is illegal on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. :D

It is sad that the moose got killed that way instead of in an honest/ethical HUNT. Quick, clean kill. I have elk and deer in my freezer now. I have eaten moose and I like it very much. Burgers, steaks, roasts and in STEW.

Many states have big problems with moose and other animals when they decide to take to the rural roads and highways. Drivers and animals have gotten killed because of overpopulation and not thinning the 'herd' in a common sense manner. Thinning the herd = wildlife not the 'drivers' although that is a thought! Joke. Ha!

Obviously global warming in conjunction with urban encroachment has forced the moose to leave it's natural habitat and move southward. The only solution I can see for this problem is to raise taxes by at least 25%.

Frightening. One of ours thinks like a politician. I suppose only 5% goes towards saving the Moose and 95% goes towards protecting a new agency designed to protect the moose.

I thought it was obvious the money should be used to subsidize Green Energy sources to combat global warming.

Very true. It's probably from Canada. We've got to reduce our dependance on foreign Moose.

It's a shame it went that way. Moose is delicious.

I agree that the outsourcing of large ruminants must stop. However Global Warming is a much more serious problem.

So? I don't understand why this is a big deal.
I don't either:scrutiny:

Its too bad for the moose and I'm glad nobody was injured, many people have lost their lives by hitting moose with their cars. I nailed a deer years ago with my truck and my vehicle was totaled, I wasn't even going that fast.

P.S. This isn't gun-related, but a moderator posted earlier and this thread hasn't been closed yet, so that means we are free to exercise the priviledge of humor. :)

We've got to stop this slaughter and register them darned cars.

They register guns, why not cars?

Sarah can see Boris house from her porch. Moose gone, now turn of squirrel.

:D

I once saw a multicar tag hit of a deer. One suv tagged it, flipped it in front of another to land at the third - wasn't pretty.

I lived in Upstate New York (Albany) in the late eighties, and spent a lot in the Adrondiaks (sp?) generally considered the wildest, least developed part left. The state forest rangers said there were about 5 moose in the entire state at that time. If there are so many now they are wandering to within 40 miles of NYC, I call that a good thing.

Also, I have seen plenty of moose in Maine. There are so many there, so close togather, they support a parasite called, I think, brain worm. It pretty much does what the name says. Moose in late stages of infection wander into the center of town and just stand around until the animal control officer can deal with the problem. I remember a photo in the newspaper of a moose standing on the roof of a police car, that the moose had colasped into the back seat. I would not be suprized if this parsite figures into the story posted above.
