Not by gun, that's illegal in NY, by car.
A moose wandered onto I-684 near Goldens Bridge in Westchester Co., about 40 miles outside on NYC a few evenings ago.
It was promptly struck by several cars, eventually involving and damaging 9 vehicles.
The body was torn to pieces, and the responding fire chief, a hunter, thought there was too much blood on the highway for a deer. He then found a leg, and a foot, and decided it wasn't a deer. The Dept. of Envir. Cons. requested they save the head for testing, it's now sitting in the FD fridge. They think it wandered down from Vermont, although NYS now has about 500 moose, but no open season.
It sort of reminded me of that Woody Allan stand up routine, where he shoots a moose but it's only grazed in the head and comes awake on his hood, which in NYC is illegal on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.
