Rain Smith, "Shooting reported at Kingsport business", Kingsport Times-News, 13 Feb 2018.

Wed morning shooting at a medical office. Suspect shot his wife. Sheriff confirms suspect was then shot by a patient with a concealed carry permit who detained the suspect at gunpoint for arrest by responding officers. Victim and suspect taken to hospital. Victim reported to have died in hospital.

""A concealed carry permit holder saw the threat, took action on the threat and stood by until officers arrived," said Sullivan County Sheriff Jeff Cassidy. "We're calling him a hero today."
"The incident was called in at David A. Guy Dentistry at 9:47 a.m. The first Sullivan County Sheriff's Office deputy arrived to the scene, 150 Clinic Drive, six minutes later. Kingsport police and the Tennessee Highway Patrol also responded, with dozens of officers soon on the scene."

I don't know how this is gonna work out in the long run. Every medical office I have visited around here is posted as a gun-free zone.

My guess that like the psychiatrist in PA that used a firearm to stop a former patient's murderous attack (in a gun free zone technically), that no charges will be filed. There is a doctrine of lesser harms at play here.

Unfortunately, if you happen to be a mere pizza delivery, grocery, or restaurant worker, you usually get fired despite acting legally but against store policy.

I say the proprietors of businesses of all types are responsible for the safety of patrons -- after all, if you trip on a carpet or staircase, you can sue.

A proprietor who bans legal carry in his establishment is therefore responsible if any of his unarmed and therefore helpless patrons is killed by an armed criminal.

Do "gun free zones" have the force of law in Tn? Also its better to be charged than dead, in my opinion.

Unfortunately yes. My doctor was a pretty hard core conservative and his clinics were not no carry zones and my dentist did not have no weapons signs either. Actually when I lived in Clarksville Tn there were very few businesses that were no carry locations.

I was there from 91-99 (Ft Campbell). I remember signs at the waffle house in new Providence and Grandpa's. Also no firearms anywhere alcohol is sold, even convenient stores, grocery stores, and the like.

Its changed a lot since then, you wouldn't recognize it now. I was assigned to Ft Campbell in March of 84 and I remember the prohibitions on firearms at a lot of those places, they aren't as prevalent now. We just moved from TN to FL last December and haven't seen any no firearms signs here so far. Grandpa's no longer exists, when Grandpa died the business went in the toilet. At one time they were the best and biggest gun shop in the area but the new owner drastically cut back on that department to where they had very few on hand. Poor management led to their downfall.

Force of the law is the main thing I would like to see changed here in TN. All a business has to do is post a sign and if you do not comply, you are a law breaker. I wouldn't mind the trespassing charge if asked to leave and you refuse. Anyone would deserve that.

Their business, their rules doesn't cut it. There are just too many times a person is forced to enter a no gun zone like in the case of a medical office. No guns violates our constitutional rights.

I only hope no charges be brought against this man if it was a no gun zone.

No guns violates our constitutional rights.

My doctor says the idiot who had a negligent discharge in his waiting room while fondling his carry gun violated his Constitutional rights. The bullet tore through two adjacent rooms, narrowly missed the physician's assistant and a nurse. The office entrance now has a no carry sign.

Yep, he's still my doctor.

He's probably a better doctor than a lawyer. The constitution, for the most part, affords rights vis-a-vis the government/laws, not illegal actions of private individuals.

I missed any news reference to "gun free zone," though I haven't looked elsewhere than the linked article. That article does say the permit holder was "legally carrying," and I would interpret that as not being a no gun premises.

Entirely different situation. That man should be dealt with for the incident completely separately because of his actions. I would expect charges to be brought against me if I did something that stupid.
Unfortunately, as long as there are guns, cars, planes, knives etc. there will always be problematic people. Those people should not dictate the rights and privileges of others that keep it on the straight and narrow.

It’s very simple for me. If a business has a sign up stating that they are a “gun free zone” or “no guns allowed” I will not carry there.

I will not spend money there.
I will not promote their business in any way.
I will not patronize them in any way.
And I let them know that.
Simple.
