Mosin Nagant Ammo

I run cheap corrosive through my M-44 all day long. I have a rubber butt pad in lieu of the metalstock one. I haven't gotten any of the TulAmmo yet, so I can't compare the two.

Many people have no idea as to correct body position when shooting from a bench and suffer for it.

Lean down onto the bench and forward into the rifle, the now near horizontal and inflexible upper body becomes a fairly solid obstacle, blocking full recoil forces and one will pay the price. Sit near upright with rifle elevated accordingly in line to shoulder, and the entire body can recoil with each shot.
Until that inflexible part ends up being the lower part of the collar bone.

I put a replacement recoil pad http://www.amazon.com/Mosin-Nagant-R.../dp/B001HIT1UO on mine and it's much more comfortable to shoot. It aslo adds about an inch and a quarter to the stock. That flat piece of sharp edged steel used as a butt plate tore me up. It's definately not for shooting in a Tee shirt. I shoot the cheap corrosive ammo and it's never been a problem. I clean it with Hoppes#9

Another vote for using surplus ammo; it's what your Mosin Nagant rifle was meant to shoot. Not a big deal to clean up after. Surplus might not be the most accurate, or the hottest, but in 10+ years of Mosin Nagant shoot, a surplus ammo has been consistent and always went bang for me.

I've only shot my own MN's with the usual Czech surplus so I can't comment on the Tula ammo and any variability.

I will agree with the guys that mentioned the difference between simply standing and actually sitting and leaning over for bench shooting. Standing and shooting it freestyle makes it a fair amount less punishing. It worked so much better that the next time I shot from the bench I stacked up the blocks and pads so that I was sitting a lot more vertical. It helped but I still found that after 20 rounds my shoulder was not sore but getting a bit "shockey". I then went on to try some handgun shooting.... which turned out to be a disaster for accuracy due to my right arm and shoulder shaking like a California earthquake..... :D

So I'd have to say that a slip on recoil pad or a thick Russian wool greatcoat :D would be a wise idea for Mosin shooting sessions.

And from the sounds of the bruising stories given in this thread it doesn't sound like the Tula ammo is all that much different from the surplus stuff for recoil. If you and your son found it hurt along with the others that have gotten bruising then it sure sounds like the two loadings are not that much different.

I do have quite a bit of experience shooting some of the heavier small bores and the nagant in stock for was far less pleasent then my .300s and 7mms. In fact my girlfriend will quite happily shoot my .300, and only fired the nagant once, off hand, before she gave up on it.
I do agree that often a nagant is a first rifle for a budding gun nut, and thus may be seen as a "hard" kicker.

I cut recoil pads from Walmart flip flops (black). $2. Contact cement. Two thicknesses really cushions well. Cut with snips or band saw. Bevel the cuts at top and bottom to mimic the lines of the stock. Real cheap and very effective. One pair of flip flops does 2 or 3 Mosins.

If you think Tula packs a thump, try some Herter's. I don't generally like Herter's ammo for anything but it was all I could find for my Mosin once. Took it to the range and could only go through 1 of 2 boxes I bought. And I'm not recoil sensitive at all. I like shooting 3.5" 12ga loads for fun.

I shoot all corrosive ammo from a bench and no pad. It never really seemed to bother me even with up to 60 rounds.

I do agree the MN 91/30's recoil seems to be not so bad when standing vs sitting. Have said that though it still feels better with that recoil pad on it fo rthis 66 year old. Like I mentioned it calms it down and the fact that it adds to the length of the stock works for me. Plus it's a change that can be changed back at any time should you ever decide to sell it in it's original configuration.
