I understand that the Mosin Nagant was designed with steel cased ammo in mind. Has any MN owner ever experienced an extractor breaking or excessive wear due to steel cased ammo usage? Would using brass cased ammo be a good idea even though these guns used steel case for years?

Thanks

If you manage to break an extractor, I will be extremely impressed, and blame failure on improper cleaning of the chamber causing case stick, not wear from cartridge rims.

Don't worry about steel cases. Mosin's are BATTLE RIFLES. They were designed to do two things, kill and be dependable. They, like all east bloc weapons, are not fine tuned weapons. Their tolerances are loose and there overbuilt. Tehy're made so that you can shoot (non-corrosive) rounds through it, lock it away in the garage for a year, take it out, smack the bolt open with a mallet and it'll still fire. Unless you're uncomfortable with the thought of steel cases, the surplus market is alot cheaper.

I have been using brass and steel cased cartridges for about 2 years. I have never experianced any problems with the extractor wearing down or breaking. Personally I was worried about the same thing when I bought mine but I asked my local gun dealer about it and he said it really doesn't make a differance as long as the powder you use in your bullets are no more than 210grains since a MN wasn't designed for taking that much of a beating. It all really depends on whether you want to use steel or brass.

I've broken two. :uhoh:

One was entirely my fault (prying on it).
The other must have been metal fatigue (sporterized M91- broke while shooting some heavy ball ammo)

youve achieved more than any 5 mosin owners combined :neener:

as stated by some one else. iv never even heard of one being replaced. heck, even if you do break one, just buy a new rifle ;)

Hmm, does a complete new rifle cost more than a new extractor?
