If you want an all around hunting / HD combination on a budget, get the combo.

If you want a dedicated HD gun get the 8 shot. I have one I bought at Big 5 and I added a Mossberg ghost ring sight kit to it.

Mossbergs are a bit stiff out of the box, but if you know which end of a smith's stone is which that's easy to fix. If you're not comfortable disassembling and fiddling with a brand new gun, you might want to consider a similar Remington 870.

Unless you are lucky enough to live in a state without sales tax, that doesn't look like an out the door price to me. It looks like an advertised sale price. You will have to add in tax and the insta check. For me that would bring the price back up to around $280 here in PA if we had the shop.

Personally, I would go for the combo package. While it performs it duty very well, the 8 shot model has limited versatility as longer field barrels are not available. Shooting at stationary paper targets gets pretty boring after a while. The longer barrel would do better shooting clay pigeons and hunting. Then just put the shorter barrel back on when you are done with it.

+1, I had to search for a longer barrel for bird hunting, but the barrel was almost as much as the new gun.

With that said, I did get alot of birds with the short barrel for years.

The Mossberg is a fine shotgun, don't let the price fool you. I've had no problems with it vs. an 870 that binds up horribly.

I am one of the lucky ones who doesn't pay sales tax. How many rounds does the combo hold?

I would jump on that deal all day long!

In fact I would buy as many as I could afford and sell them to friends, relatives, anyone wise enough to see such a great deal!
I wish we had Big 5 in East Tennessee!

need help

I was also looking at one of the two Mossberg's, but Big 5 also has a CHARLES DALY ‘FIELD TACTICAL’ 12-GA. PUMP SHOTGUN on sale for $239

6-Round Capacity with 18 1/2” Barrel!
• HANDLES 2 3/4” & 3” SHOT SHELLS
• FRONT RAMP SIGHT
• SYNTHETIC STOCK
Regular Price $279.99
Our Sale Price $249.00
In-store Rebate -$10.00

I do not plan to use for hunting, just HD.

Any suggestions?

I, too was wondering if the Charles Daly @ $239 may be a good choice. Any experience of th CD shotguns vs. Mossberg 500?

Just 2 words....

Mossberg Combo.

I started out with a Maverick 88 (Mossbergs budget-aware line), added the 18-1/2" cylinder-bore plain barrel, and in 2 minutes if I work slooooowwww I can go from HomeLand Security to Woods-N-Water use...still have the 28" mod-choke barrel

Is the combo considered a mossberg 500?

Yeppers, D.S. That's the most classic form of the 500. The 500 is a system, not really a single gun, though. It's based on that receiver. A 500A is a 12 gauge 3" chamber 5+1 standard shotgun with a multitude of barrels that fit it.
