The NYPD's entire fleet of Highway Patrol officers was pulled from their posts and rushed to a Bronx firing range yesterday because of a malfunction discovered with their shotguns, sources said. The snafu was discovered during a training session at the Rodman's Neck range when NYPD weapon experts found "intermittent" problems with the firing pin that prevented the gun from discharging. All 75 Mossberg 590A1 shotguns had to be turned in for the older Ithaca 37s. Officers then had to be recertified to use those guns before they could return to their posts. Precinct squad cars were sent in shifts to make up for their absence, though the NYPD insisted there was no lapse in patrols.

I believe is the state patrol and had nothing to do with NYPD. Also the models were the heavy longer trigger pull models.


Kiesler's Police Supply back in 1999 had these 590 trade in valued at 240.00 only Law/Mil sales.

Skip to 2011- I heard the Georgia State Patrol also had issues with light primer strikes and saftey engaging after a single shot. These weapons have been traded in. Now another budget minded agency has purchased some of them. Rumor is that several of those officer on qualification day experienced light primer strikes and saftey engaging.

Any other agencies or Military units still carrying these 590a1 with or without problems?

Not sure about LEO or Mil, but mine shoots and shoots and shoots with little to no cleaning. I have never had a misfire in many 1000's of rounds.

Must be operator error then? Not bashing cops, but many of them are less than average marksman.

If the weapon passed the harsh military testing standards then that says alot.

My 590A1 has been working fine. If it was proven to be Sailor-proof then what is NYPD doing to them with their goofy triggers that caused them to fail?
