I'm in the market for a home defense 18" barrell SG.

I like the 590A1 because of the steel safety and ease of use of that safety.

I like the 870 cause the trigger feels much, much better.

870 cost is a slight bit more, but negligable cause I'll keep the gun forever.

Which do you guys/girls recommend and why?:)

eddie c-clamp,

You are right on time. I was getting concerned because we had not had this debate in about a week. :D I recently initiated this very debate myself and I chose the Mossberg. They are both great guns. Most people will probably vote Remington, but I love the Mossy 590 because it feels better and the tang safety is excellent. When it is all said and done, follow Dave McCracken's advice. "Get the one that feels best....."

another vote for dave's advice.

i've owned both and ended up selling the mossburg and sticking with 870. the 870 just feels better to me. it's been a while since i've owned the moss but IIRC the mag tube is not as easy to clean, and it's not as versatile regarding bbl changes.

the extended mag tube is nice but there is something to be said for light and fast manipulation with skilled reload of a standard tube.

They both feel good to me in the local fun store......:D

Recently read an article that remington will produce their 10 Millionth 870 later this year....that amazes me...

Mossberg's made quite a few also......tho I don't have the figure on that....

I couldn't access that link but I'm almost positive I've seen it already......Yes, it is a great article, with the author putting a slight recommendation to the 870.

Although he conceeds that the Mossy 590 A1 is awesome also....

"..Get the one that feels best..." It's actually the one that fits you best. Mind you, if it fits right, it feels right too. The only reason to opt for an 870 is because of all the aftermarket stuff available for it. There's more of 'em for an 870. Don't even think about a pistol grip with no stock. A shotgun with no stock is the most useless thing on Earth.

+1 on the get what fits comment

-2 on the shotgun with no stock is the most useless thing on earth comment........it's second most useless at worst because everyone knows that the most useless shotgun on earth is the one with no shells.....:what:

I'd get this one and be done with it...:D

Am I wrong or has this exact topic been covered 1,888 times in this forum?

The same as every gun you'll ever buy, once you've come to the point where you've done your research and narrowed it down, shoot them if you can. If you can't, pick the one that feels right.

Win 1300, Rem 870, Mossberg 590/500. You can't go wrong unless you pick one that feels like crap and you aren't comfortable shooting it.

If nothing was "discussed" more then once about guns we wouldn't have much to talk about would we....

Hey If you can afford it buy both and then take some time to make your decision and sell the other one!

You won't loose to much on the resale of either one.

If you like to have a bayonet on there like I do then get the 590 hehe

I bought one and love it! But I did put the side saddle and speedfeed stock on it. Fully loaded it's heavy as hell, but I'm only packin it around the house when needed so no biggy.

I went with the 590A1. The issue of the safety location was moot, since it is a home defense gun I couldn't imagine any time the safety would be used.

For me safety location is an issue I have shot both a fair amount but I prefer the safety location of the 870. It is not a huge deal either way but it becomes a real issue to me if one uses a stock such as the one in mainsails photo. I also like knox stocks that are that syle. For others this might not matter but for me it is enough to tip the scale towards the 870.

The mossberg is a very serviceable weapon however and one cannot go too wrong either way.

I have shot both. I own two Mossbergs. one maverick 88 and one 590. I love the bayonet lug on the 590. The 870 is a little shorter therefore it might be more handy as an HD gun. the maverick 88 is the same length as the 870 though. My maverick has been my beater gun for years now, it has ended up in a creek, ridden hundreds of miles in the back of my vehicle without a case, cleanings have been neglected and it still fires every time, never had any problems. I have had the 870 jam on me more than a few times.

ive shot a buddies 590, i got a 500. dont like the weight of the 870. good gun, but after seeing why the mossberg is the only shotgun company to pas the riggerious test of the military, i went mossberg.

actually got mine a few years back, and just today got a 20inch barrel and im in love all over again.

so i have the wood stock set, speedfeed stock, 28inch vented choke barrel for clays/hunting, and the 20inch with the speed feed stock for HD, takes me MAYBE 20 minutes to change the complete look of mine.

also have well over 4Krounds through it and never a hickup.

the mossberg is the only shotgun company to pas the riggerious test of the military

do you have a link to support this? i'd like to read some info pertaining to the tests.

thanks

Remington didn't submit a shotgun for the tests. The specs included a ambi safety. It wasn't worth it to change the 870 design for a mere 50K units.

Remington's 10 millionth 870s is being made right now. The military contract is small change to Big Green.

And, if you check the news, plenty of 870s are serving their country, contract or no contract.....
