Got to shoot my new 930 yesterday. WOW. eight rounds of 12ga as fast as you can pull the trigger. Only got to go through a 100 rounds. it was birdshot. No problems. Gun was 100 per cent. No stoppages whatsoever. Haven't grinned this much in ages.

Agreed, I think this shotgun will continue to increase in popularity in the future. I really enjoy mine and it has replaced the 870 as my go-to shotgun. I've got about 400 rounds through mine and it is very reliable with all types of ammo from birdshot to slugs to buckshot, even low recoil rounds. Its 8 round capacity (or 9 with ghost loading) is a big plus over similarly sized guns with less capacity in my opinion. My only problems came when I over lubed it - it does not like a lot of grease or oil, especially in cold temperatures w/ low recoil rounds. Go easy on the lube and it will chew everything up.

I was just looking one of those over the other day. Good to hear positive reviews from it. Maybe this year I'll get a new shotgun.

So, I've read that the forearm is loose and the sights are obviously too high for a regular stock.

Your thoughts!?

Al

The forearm on mine was fine. As for the sights I only got out to about the 10 yard range so there wasnt a lot of sighting going on. I was indooors. For that range they seemed fine. Seemed to be hitting where I was aiming.

But I'll bet your cheek wasn't welded to the stock properly. Try this for us...

Close your eyes, shoulder the gun as it FEELS it should be, proper cheek-weld and all, and then open your eye. I'd wager you won't be able to see through the sights but will be lookig at the rear sight mount and to use the sights you'll have to move your jaw up to the stock...

Al

I dunno, I'm away from my 930 so i can't try that exercise but I have no problems getting a good cheek weld and sight picture even shooting left handed. I don't find it to be an issue. I don't know where you've read that the forearm is loose but compared to an 870 it's rock solid (in terms of side to side looseness); not loose at all, at least through 400 rounds of shooting.

I realize they had some quality control problems at first with the front sight being canted and other things, but I think they've resolved most of those now. Personally I went to dick's sporting goods, inspected several, and they all looked like they had straight front sights and tight forearms. I picked the one that had the fewest cosmetic dings and took it home.

You compare the forearm of a pump-action to a gas gun and decide the latter is tighter, comparatively...

Is there someone else who has any practical experience with the 930 forearm and its high sights?

Al

Al i can say that the forearm isnt an issue the ones i have handled are rock solid compaired to other semi autos

as for the sights yes they CAN be a little high but as we are all different some of us (myself included) can get a good cheek weld and still see my sights (i can also use tall rings on my rifles ;-) )

as for the sights being canted mossberg claims to have resolved the QC issue and will repair any firearm that is canted

also proper cheak weld is relative with shotgunners some of us "point shoot" and only use the sights as a reference when actualy needed and can muddle through the rest when we get there

and yes im aware of the argument why get sights if you arent going to use them but that falls under the this is america and i can do what i want catagory

i have yet to fire a 930SPX but i can say for sure its on the list

Get this Al, NOT EVERYONE IS YOU.

Many people can use the 930 just fine, and don't have the problems you apparently had. One specimen of a model isn't near enough to judge it by.
Grow up.

You are a rude individiual, I'm sorry for trying to help you. Notice I said "SIDE TO SIDE" movement when comparing it to the 870. Go away, and please do not buy a 930, you are not worthy :barf:

Hey guys, what just happened here? I was reading an interesting exchange on a new shotgun, one that interests me, and all of a sudden people are getting mad at each other? Maybe a little overreaction here?

back to the topic at at hnd.............

I just got a new 930 spx this week and heres my findings after MANY hours of handling.

First, I love this gun. I stopped feeling giddy about new guns many years ago. Everythime I pick it up I cant help but smile and I feel like a 10 year old with a crush. I thought I had just grown out of my gun phase unitl I brought this home.

Initial findings are its super light! Lightest shotgun Ive ever owned, and Ive had MANY.
The one I have is built solid. No forend wobble at all.
The action is fairly smooth. Im sure after a few hundred rounds it will be amazing.
Loading is really nice and smooth. The shells slide into the magazine nice and easy witha good solid lockup once in there.
The mag tube spring and plunger do an outstanding job ejecting a fresh shell from the magazine. It throws them out with authority! Also the follower is a nice heavy duty milled steel. No need to replace this one with some high dollar unit.
The gun cycles everything. Low brass budget bird is not a problem.
Also, you can float one on the elevator for a total of 9 rounds, ready to rock, with no worries of a malfunction, she does just fine.

Magazine unloading is a snap. You can unload without having to cycle each round through the action just by putting your thumb in front of the magazine loading port and depressing the bolt release. It will knidly hand you one round at a time.

BUT, the sights are really high. Im gonna say CHIN WELD on this one. But, with the ultra light recoil its easily manageable.
My only other concern is that the spent shell ejection is a bit onthe weak side, we will see if this becomes a problem in the future.

Overall, for all intended purposes, this gun is a 10 in my book.

Thats my .02 ladies.

I'll consider one if a 13" LOP stock other than the Choate pistol grip shoulder stock version becomes available, though I'd probably go with a bead sighted model over the SPX.

No no I was just pointing out that in your second pic you can see the front sight through the ghost ring. I did not get that charging handle.

Guys what's a good price for a Mossber 930 SPc nowdays? is it worth gettign oen with a pistol grip or not?

TX

Has anyone actually tried putting "the" Moss Monte Carlo stock on the 930? Mossberg customer service told me they don't have one for it and, frankly, it seems the sights are just too far off the receiver and barrel for a good cheek weld.

What I'd really want is a SpeedFeed +4 Monte Carlo stock! lol

Call them back, the person you spoke with doesn't know what they're talking about.

From Mossberg's own web-site:
the "standard" stock:

The "monte carlo" stock:

Call them back and ask to speak to a supervisor....

There are 3 inserts included with the gun that will raise the the stock. I used the highest one and then I added a segment of pipe insulation under the stock ammo sleeve (look at the OP's picture) to get a proper cheek weld. It works very well for me.

Hi everyone.
First poster here. I have recently purchased a 930SPX.
I would really like to upgrade the charging handle.
The one pictured in BKJeffery's post looks great. Any info on obtaining one like that would be appreaciated BK.
I have also seen a supposed upgrade right from Mossberg.
I have seen the Choat model and The NOB that can't be tracked down.
It seems those posters are M.I.A.
Flat Iron forge has a good looking model but can't get them to answer the phone.:uhoh:

I would appreciate any feedback.
Thanks, John.:)

I would have liked the NOB or the one pictured above, but I was able to check out the Choate version at the NRA convention and for $9, the price was right.
