Any thoughts on these rifles? I was thinking about the Ruger Gunsite Scout but found some info on the Mossberg which sells for considerably less. That translates into more ammo and a scope in my book. I know there are scoped combos but how good is the included one? The price is only marginally increased by twenty or thirty bucks so it can't be that great. The Savage Axis is another option that I've considered. It would take me quite a bit longer to save up for the Ruger but if it's that much better that's what I would go with.

I'd get the MVP no questions asked.

Doesn't it take M-14 magazines? If so, that's the cats meow. Savage makes some excellent and ACCURATE rifles. I wouldn't hesitate for a microsecond on Mars, which is roughly the same as a microsecond on Earth for all intents and purposes... that equates to no time at all.

Yes, I am at work and trying to kill time by making uneccesary long posts. :)

But that doesn't change the fact that the Mossberg MVP in 7.62 (and 5.56) is a good gun. :D!

I'd say it depends on which Ruger GSR you are comparing the MVP to.

If you want a lighter rifle, then I'd get the newly released polymer stocked GSR with the included muzzle brake.

If you are comparing the laminate GSR to the MVP, then it would be whatever your preferences are. The GSR feels slimmer in the hands due to the cut of the stock.

Even better, DPMS/SR25 mags, which means you can use Magpul .308 Pmags.

Honestly, I think the GSR is a much better, more refined rifle. It just feels good to me in hand-especially with the scout scope rail off and using a conventional scope setup. Love it. Haven't handled an MVP. The only advantage I see to it is the magazines.

Not sure if you're aware but Mossberg also has a new scout variant of the MVP with extended rail and a peep sight at the rear. I wouldn't get a scoped combo because the scout versions at least come with a UTG/Leapers scope which are complete junk in my experience. Save the money and buy a nice Leupold scout scope instead.

To be honest I have no ownership experience with either rifle but I do own a 5.56 MVP patrol. It's a fun little rifle but it's pretty rough around the edges and doesn't feel anywhere near as polished as the GSRs I've handled at gun stores. I have also had several issues with mine including light primer strikes, a firing pin that wouldn't reset(this actually put the rifle out of commission until I had time to partially disassemble the bolt), and a scope rail that started to wobble the first time I put a scope on it. They neglected to Loctite the mounting screws at the factory. It also takes more force to work the bolt than any of the 3 Mosin Nagants I own, if that tells you anything about how refined the rifle is.

On the positive side though, I do enjoy shooting the thing. It's more than accurate enough. In the last couple hundred rounds I haven't experienced any more issues, so maybe that was just break in. And to its credit, the rifle will swallow steel cased as well as brass cased ammo, even when I switch back and forth between the two in an effort to trip it up. And it feels incredibly solid in the hands due to that coated wood stock and thick barrel. It gives the impression it could take a beating.

I still like mine enough even with the hiccups that I would consider a 308 version as well. The 308s are better anyways since they don't have that silly little spring loaded piece hanging off the bottom of the bolt.

All in all, my advice to you would be...buy both.

The Mossberg has worse fit/finish and feels cheaper than the Ruger. Mossberg has a fairly sloppy/bind prone bolt as well. However, I feel the Mossbergs advantages outweigh its foibles.

It depends on how picky you are. If you want a knock about rifle and don't mind flaws in finish, the MVP works fine. The ones that I have shot and sold have all been decent in the accuracy department.

If you put the MVP beside the Ruger you will notice the difference immediately. Metal and wood finish is better in the Ruger and the wood to metal fit is much better. Ruger has better Quality and better Quality Control but you will pay a $200 premium for it.

I buy for function and not so much form. Based off of what you and others have said I'm pretty solidly in the Mossberg camp. I own a model 500 and an 835 in their shotguns and have never been disappointed. Looks like I'll be adding an MVP too.

Mossbergs will shoot. I am waiting for the new Patriot. The synthetic guns are just making it to the distributors.

Well the MVP will be on hold. I decided to build an AR 10 due to the current political climate. You never know what those clowns are going to try to pull next so I might as well obtain another EBR right? I just ordered a PA10 stripped lower from PSA.

The Ruger IS a MUCH better rifle overall.
That being said I bought the cheapest Savage Axis .223 they make just before Christmas as a project gun. BAD stock, REALLY BAD trigger (not accu-trigger). Did some stock mods, polished trigger and new springs. Gun WILL shoot well under MOA at 100yds, best 3 shot so far .35". As accurate, but still not as NICE as my Ruger 77's or my Win 70.

Mossberg MVP

Can't speak about the 7.62 MVP but I bought a 5.56 Mossberg Predator a year or so ago. I've got a used Tasco 4X scope (cost me 20 bucks at a gunshow) on it and it'll shoot about MOA (when shot by me, who knows if someone good shot it).

So no complaints. Looks nice enough but I bought it to have a "utility" rifle that accepts the most common ammo and magazines around so fit and finish are secondary anyway.

I'm keeping it.

Mossberg

One thing to remember. The Mossberg Predator is chambered in 5.56 so no worries about any .223 vs 5.56 ammo differences that so many folks write about.
